Chris Waller’s champion mare Winx will continue her new season domination as the headline runner in the Chelmsford Stakes 2016 at Royal Randwick Racecourse this weekend in Sydney.

The star Street Cry five-year-old has won her past 10 races on the trot and will be out to make it eleven straight second-up in the weight-for-age $250,000 Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) this Saturday.
A six-time Group 1 winner, Winx has amassed over $6.8 million in career prize money and is best known for her $3 million Group 1 W.S. Cox Plate (2040m) victory at Moonee Valley last spring.
She is on track for a Cox Plate title defence on October 22 this Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, with Waller also looking to extend her campaign further to include a shot at the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (2000m) on Saturday November 5 at Flemington Racecourse.
To help get his mighty mare there, Waller is keeping her to easier early season targets at home in Sydney.
The first was the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) on August 20, which she won by a runaway 3.5 lengths as the $1.28 favourite.
That was Winx’s shortest starting price to date and she is unlikely to be much longer second-up in the Chelmsford Stakes when she returns to Randwick for the 11th time shooting for her seven win at the track.
On Monday Racing NSW received 12 early entries, Chelmsford Stakes nominations extended until 11:00am (AEST) on Tuesday.
Along with Winx Waller has a further five nominees in the mix including his Caulfield and Melbourne Cup-bound stayers Who Shot Thebarman and Grand Marshal.
The duo both come off tail-end runs in the Warwick Stakes having finished sixth and seventh respectively behind their star stablemate over the unsuitably short distance.
Waller has also entered his The BMW winner from the autumn Preferment who races in the Chelmsford Stakes first-up, French import Spiritjim who is yet to race in Sydney and fellow import Storm The Stars also first-up on the weekend.
Runner-up to Winx in the Warwick Stakes first-up was the John O’Shea-trained Hartnell, Godolphin’s Authorzied six-year-old nominated to take on the heroic mare once again this weekend.
Having shown-up well for the placing in his first start since a fifth to Winx from late February in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m), Hartnell chases his first win since taking out the 2015 Group 1 The BMW (2400m) in March last year.
He resumed racing last spring with a fourth to Complacent in the Chelmsford Stakes and also placed fifth to Winx in the Cox Plate later that campaign.
The other key form race leading into the Chelmsford Stakes this weekend is Caulfield’s Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400m) run in Melbourne on August 13.
Runner-up Jacquinot Bay for Lindsay Park, who has a two-from-four Randwick strike rate, and third placed Entirely Platinum prepared by Hawkes Racing are both nominated for the Chelmsford Stakes in Sydney on Saturday.
Also coming off a nice lead-up run is the James Cummings-trained More Than Ready colt Prized Icon.
Winner of the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) as a two-year-old at the Randwick track in mid-April, the now three-year-old kicked things off with a fourth to Divine Prophet in the Group 3 Up & Coming Stakes (1300m) a fortnight ago.
Prized Icon is a dual nominee on Saturday’s card also entered for a possible run against his own age in the Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality Handicap (1400m).
