Melbourne Cup performed Signoff is the headline final acceptor for Adelaide’s Penny Edition Stakes 2016 at Morphettville Parks this Saturday.

The now seven-year-old Darren Weir-trained son of Authorized is one of a full field of final acceptors for this weekend’s $100,000 Listed Penny Edition Stakes (1400m), the weight-for-age clash attracting 14 confirmed runners plus an emergency in Daniela Rosa (13).
Wearing the number one saddle-cloth is the highest-rated of the runners, Signoff, drawn a treat in barrier four with Harry Coffey to ride the gelding for his first look at the Parks track.
Best known for his brave fourth behind German raider Protectionist in the Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) back in 2014, Signofff was last seen winning the Group 3 Lord Reims Stakes (2600m) at Morphettville back in March by a runaway 6.4 lengths.
He jumped the odds-on favourite in that South Australian staying clash during the autumn and didn’t disappoint, the galloper likely to sit top of the Penny Edition Stakes odds for his first-up run this weekend also.
Winner of last year’s Melbourne Cup with 101/1 roughie Prince Of Penzance, Weir has also accepted for Ulmann in Saturday’s Black-Type.
John Allen rides the in-form Sebring five-year-old from a good gate five draw, Ulmann coming off back-to-back Melbourne wins over 1400m including his latest at Flemington a fortnight back.
Aside from Signoff the two other highest-rated Penny Edition Stakes hopefuls this spring are the Mick Price-trained Mighty Like and Ken Sweeny’s defending champion Riziz.
Steven King is booked to ride Host seven-year-old Mighty Like, the Melbourne raider having saluted down the Flemington straight two back before his fifth in the Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap (1200m) on August 6.
Mighty Like has had two previous starts at Morphettville Parks including a win over the mile in April of 2014.
Veteran Zariz eight-year-old Riziz has the outside barrier to overcome on the weekend, Todd Pannell sticking with the gelding after his second to Beirut at Morphettville in the Group 3 Spring stakes (1200m) a fortnight ago.
Riziz won the 2014 Spring Stakes before a second in the Penny Edition, an effort he went one better than last year when defeating Alpine Eagle.
He hasn’t won again over the past 12 months, but the last start run showed he was on track for another good performance on the weekend.
Another headliner racing first-up is the Peter Blanch-trained Jim’s Journey.
The Good Journey gelding was fourth to Signoff in the Lord Reims Stakes and fourth again a fortnight later behind Purple Smile in the Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m).
He will improve off whatever he does first-up on the weekend once out over more distance, but has won two of his four resuming runs to date.
Other notable hopes include Oakbank Cup third placegetter Go Dreaming, the Phillip Stokes-trained Northern Meteor mare Runway Star who won the Group 3 Proud Miss Stakes (1200m) in Adelaide during the winter and Rocket Commander.
Court Command mare Rocket Commander has run third in her four most recent runs all in South Australia including in the Spring Stakes earlier in the month.
She has a stellar record at the track (8-2-1-2) and over the distance (9-4-2-0), but is drawn wide in barrier 14 for this weekend.
