Due to run as Race 7 at 4:05pm (AEST), this year’s $160,000 Listed McKimms Real Estate Grafton Cup (2350m) originally attracted a final field of 15.

There are just 13 left after the early scratchings of Swift Lady (14) and Jiayuguan (11).

Sitting top of the updated Grafton Cup odds at Ladbrokes.com.au at $4.40 and firming is Tony Gollan’s last start Caloundra Cup winner Amexed.

Drawn the rails for this afternoon’s clash, the Pentire five-year-old goes up from the 54kg he carried to victory over the mile and a half at the Sunshine Coast on July 2 to 55kg with Robbie Fradd retaining the ride.

It’s a wide open Grafton Cup betting market this season with four rivals hot on his heels including Godolphin galloper Malice ($4.60), and Michael Nolan‘s Ipsiwch and Caloudnra Cup runner-up and Jumbo Prince ($4.80).

So will the dominant players in the bookies’ eyes get the job done or is there value tipping an upset Grafton Cup result from the likes of Chris Waller‘s veteran galloper Index Linked ($6) carrying top weight in the race, the David Payne-trained Foreign Prince ($8) coming off a Winter Cup third over the mile and a half or even Bruce Hill‘s Gold Coast visitor Teronado ($14)?

Our 2016 Grafton Cup Trifecta Tip is #5 Amexed from #2 Malice and #11 All Clear

1st

#5 Amexed ($4.40)

The Caloundra Cup winner is losing value firming fast in the markets, but happy to stick with the proven stayer who shoots for his third win on the trot and who is improving each run this time in. Should be peaking here, is in Sydney for the first time but the lead-up form is right and the weight is more than manageable. Rails run, so needs to stay out of trouble, but Fradd knowns the horse well and he’s a hard horse to knock in this field lacking a clear favourite.

2nd

#2 Malice ($4.60)

John O’Shea’s Teofilo five-year-old comes off nice form in Brisbane having run third in the Group 3 Tattersall’s Cup (2200m) last time out when beaten under a length. He goes up a kilo to 57kg for this and is over the distance for the first time, but if he handles the extra metres he’ll be placed well here having done his best work late in the Eagle Farm lead-up.

3rd

#11 All Clear ($18)

Value in the markets looks to be in All Clear, Paul King’s mount drawn a treat in gate four and getting in on the 54kg minimum. The Noel Doyle-trained mare comes off a Caloundra Cup third beaten only two lengths from a similar barrier (5) with the same kilos and can improve on that in this at a nice price.
