Straturbo Wins Listed Chief De Beers Quality

Gary Portelli has claimed an early black type win on 2016 Doomben Cup Day this afternoon, as classy sprinter Straturbo comfortably took out the Listed Chief De Beers Quality (1050m).

Straturbo continued to firm in betting markets in the lead-up to the Chief De Beers Quality this afternoon, and did his chances of success no harm whatsoever when jumping well and taking an ideal position in running on the heels of early leaders Plateau Gold and Vienna Queen.

Offered a clear racing line upon arriving at the final straight, the Stratum gelding immediately responded when asked for an extra effort by jockey Robbie Fradd; comfortably kicking clear to find the line a length and a half ahead of closest rival Wicked Intent.

Fradd delivered a well-timed ride on Straturbo to win the 2016 Chief De Beers Quality and was pleased to repay Portelli for the faith the trainer showed in his ability.

“Gary said to me ‘there’s going to be a lot of speed in the race and try to get a nice spot,” Fradd said.

“I had him going, got a lovely spot and the tempo was good. I peeled him out and he just went whoosh, so thanks to Gary and his team!”

Stable representative for Portelli, Sean Alder was thrilled with Straturbo’s performance for success in the 2016 Chief De Beers Quality; the horse’s first race win since taking out the Magic Millions Sprint (1100m) on the Gold Coast in January 2015.

“It has been a long time. He’s tried every time he’s got out there and Gary’s done a great job, but today’s the day!” Alder said after the race.

“It was a very good win. He’s a 1000m, 1100m horse. That’s it, that’s his lot.

“He’ll go home, because Gary always takes them him. He’s been home and back a couple of times.”

In taking out the 2016 Chief De Beers Quality, Straturbo has now posted seven wins and further ten minors through a total of forty career starts.
