The penultimate race on the All Aged Stakes Day card in Sydney this Saturday is the JRA Plate 2016, betting tips and the latest Fixed Win odds for the handicap clash found below.
Due to jump at 4:25pm (AEST) as Randwick Race 8, this season’s $150,000 Group 3 Sharp Japan Racing Association Plate (2000m) features a capacity field of 13 stayers plus four emergencies.
Leading the current JRA Plate odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $3.70 for the win is Havana Cooler drawn ideally in gate two with top Sydney-based hoop James McDonald booked for the ride.
John O’Shea trains the in-form Hurricane Run six-year-old who was third in the Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) over the mile and a half last October in his first and only other Randwick assignment.
Havana Cooler returned to racing this season winning the Group 3 Doncaster Prelude (1500m) first-up in late March and is second-up this Saturday going up from 54.5k that win to 57kg for the JRA Plate.
There three other hopes under $10 in the JRA Plate betting markets this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival including Messene drawn wide but coming off some impressive form.
Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes saddle-up the rising Lonhro eight-year-old who comes off back-to-back Group 3 seconds over the 2000m at Rosehill.
The last saw him beaten only a quarter-length by It’s Somewhat in the Group 3 Neville Sellwood Stakes (2000m) on March 26 and he goes up from 56.5kg to 58kg as the co-weight for Saturday’s clash.
The other best fancied are the Lee & Anthony Freedman-trained market mover Guardini ($6) coming off a Group 3 Easter Cup (2000m) second at Caulfield and the best of Chris Waller’s contingent Sadler’s Lake ($7.50) getting in on a favourable 55kg.
So will one of the single figure chances get the job done or is the value in tipping an upset JRA Plate result from the likes of Waller’s former Queensland Derby winner Hawkspur ($11), the Helen Page-trained Rudy ($11) with the rails run from barrier one or Weary ($13)?
1st
#11 Sadler’s Lake ($7.50)
Blake Shinn rides Waller’s smart High Chaparral four-year-old Sadler’s Lake from a good mid-field draw, the gelding out to improve on a last start 10th to Havana Cooler in the Doncaster Prelude. He was beaten just over three lengths, so was far from disgraced, and can turn the tables here returning to his pet track where he has three wins and a second from six starts to date.
2nd
#4 Havana Cooler ($3.70)
Havana Cooler is the deserving favourite, but gives a bit of weight away going up in the kilos here. Still has the winning form from last start when hitting the line strongly, and if he improves off that and handles the 2.5kg increase he’ll be hard to beat from the barrier with McDonald in the saddle.
3rd
#2 Messene ($5.50)
Plenty of boxes ticked by this Team Hawkes-trained seven-year-old who has had two runs over the distance for two seconds to date. Both of those were at his two most recent starts in the Group 3 class at Rosehill, and in the Neville Sellwood on March 26 he was beaten only a quarter-length. That’s great form heading into this.
