The Neville Sellwood Stakes 2016 is shaping up as a class showdown on The BMW Day in Sydney on Saturday and below you’ll find the latest betting markets and insider tips on the Rosehill Gardens clash.
Due to run as Rosehill Race 3 at 1:55pm (AEDT), this season’s $150,000 Group 3 The Daily Telegraph Neville Sellwood Stakes (2000m) originally drew a final field of 11 runners.
There are just 10 left in the mix after the early scratching of French import Guardini who had the outside barrier (11).
Current favourite in Neville Sellwood Stakes betting through Ladbrokes.com.au paying $2.35 and firming is the John O’Shea-trained It’s Somewhat.
Last start winner of the Group 2 Ajax Stakes (1500m) at the track a fortnight back, the Dynaformer six-year-old has James McDonald jumping on for the weekend and drops a kilo to 56.5kg as he seeks another autumn success.
Following the favourite in the Neville Sellwood Stakes odds are five other fancies under $10 including the in-form Sir John Hawkwood ($5.50) coming off a first-up win in the Group 3 Sky High Stakes (2000m) and narrow runner-up in the same lead-up Messene ($6.50) for Team Hawkes drawn well in gate four.
So can It’s Somewhat win again at Rosehill or is there an upset Neville Sellwood Stakes result pending from the likes of the 58kg top weight and Group 1 winner Magic Hurricane ($9.50) or Canberra Cup third placegetter Centre Pivot ($8) on 55kg with Blake Shinn riding?
1st
#6 Sir John Hawkwood ($5.50)
Think the price on offer for David Vandyke’s Sir Percy seven-year-old is generous and we’re happy to take it. He was in good form in the summer running top two three times on the trot before a freshen-up. The evergreen veteran returned to win the Group 3 Sky High over 2000m last time out with 55kg. He goes up only a half-kilo here returning to the track and distance shooting for his fourth 2000m win from seven runs. Is a second-up flyer (5-3-1-0) so will only be improving. The one to beat.
2nd
#1 Magic Hurricane ($9.50)
A stablemate to the short priced favourite, this Godolphin-raced six-year-old shoots for his first win since the Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) last October. He’s had three unplaced runs this time in, and failed to beat home any runners in the Sky High last time out. That said, he was only beaten three lengths and even with the same kilos he’s capable of more with the right run.
3rd
#2 It’s Somewhat ($2.35)
Favourite for a reason and was too good off an on-speed run in similar class last time out. He has the winning lead-up at the track, but he’s yet to win over further than 1500m so the distance is the test here.
