Top Weight Leads 2016 Hobart Cup Betting Odds

Despite being forced to carry the top weight in Monday’s Hobart Cup 2016, the Peter Moody-trained Victorian raider Metaphorical is installed as the favourite for the latest Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival feature.

Running as Hobart Race 7 at 4:35pm (local time) on Monday afternoon, this year’s $200,000 Hobart Cup (2400m) features a final field of 15 stayers.

Leading the latest Hobart Cup odds through Ladbrokes.com.au is Moody’s 58kg top weight, Dylan Thomas mare Metaphorical.

The five-year-old has her first Tasmanian run and is paying $4.20 to salute at Hobart Racecourse with the big weight from her wide barrier 14 draw with ace hoop Damien Oliver booked for the ride.

The classy mainlander mare ran third two back behind Signoff in the Listed Lord Stakes (1700m) at Caulfield on Boxing Day before a fourth at Flemington over 2000m behind Second Bullet last time out in mid-January.

She is up from only 53.5kg that day so will need to be at her best rising in kilos and up to a distance she has no winning form over.

Hot on Metaphorical’s heels in the early Hobart Cup betting markets paying $4.40 is another hopeful out in a double digit barrier draw, Wales (12).

Steven King is down to ride Richard Laming’s Redoute’s Choice stallion who, like Metaphorical, is yet to race at the track or win over further than 2040m.

His last run was a Moonee Valley win on January 23 and his second in November’s Listed Ballarat Cup (2200m) showed his potential to last the Hobart Cup distance.

He carried 60kg, King aboard again, to victory last month and will enjoy the drop back to Monday’s 55.5kg minimum weight.

There are three other single figure fancies including the Chris Waller-trained Quick Strike and the in-form Up Cups both at $6 for the win.

Quick Strike jumps from a gun barrier two draw with champion jockey Craig Williams in the saddle, the High Chaparral four-year-old coming off a fourth over the distance at Caulfield back on Australia Day.

He had 60kg on his back for that run and is down to 55.5kg for this challenge shooting for his first win since a 1900m effort carrying 59kg at Canterbury last November.

Up Cups meanwhile is another 55.5kg hope, the David Brunton-trained Tasmanian local drawn midfield in barrier eight with jockey David Pires continuing his association.

A five-year-old son of Helike, Up Cups shoots for his third Hobart win on the trot after good wins over 2100m and 2200m respectively last month including in the Summer Cup carrying 59kg.

The last of the horses in the Hobart Cup field under $10 to take it out at $6.50 is Summer Cup runner-up Geegees Goldengirl.

Apprentice Sigrid Carr rides Stuart Gandy’s four-year-old daughter of Wordsmith, the classy mare having won the Devonport Cup (1880m) before her second last start to Up Cups.

She has a top Hobart track record (13-4-5-4) and is after her maiden win over further than 2100m.
