Kelly Doughty’s in-form Gold Coast visitor Little Brown Horse is the headline nominee for the major support race on the Doomben card in Brisbane on Saturday, the Just Now Fillies and Mares Handicap 2015.
Brisbane Handicap Day features a double shot of black-type racing including the $100,000 Just Now Fillies and Mares Handicap (1350m) that has attracted a bumper 19 early entries this summer.
Just two of those come off a last start victory including Doughty’s Waterford Road seven-year-old Little Brown Horse.
The mare took her Doomben race record up to four wins from 23 starts on November 21 when taking out the Listed Arcade Classic (1200m) by three quarters of a length.
That was her first run since July and her first at the track since her close second behind Jetset Lad in the Listed Tattersall’s Mile (1640m) during the winter carnival.
The other last start winner in the mix is Beaudesert’s Baroness Zeena, the Flo Braybrook-trained seven-year-old saluting over 14009m at home on November 27 ahead of her sixth Doomben run where she has just the one third place finish.
Runner-up to Little Brown Horse in the Arcade Classic last time out, Toowoomba-based Haradasun six-year-old Tukiyo is also nominated for Saturday’s rematch.
The John Dann-trained mare has winning form up to 1350m and is one from three over the track and distance, her latest turf triumph being at Doomben in late June on the back of a good campaign that included a narrow third to Pearce Force in the Group 3 Glenlogan Park Stakes (1350m) and second behind Real Surreal in Ipswich’s Listed Gai Waterhouse Classic over the same distance.
Also from Toowoomba and coming off nice lead-up form is the Steve Tregea-trained four-year-old daughter of Snippetson Our Lady Mac.
She is two from four at Doomben after back-to-back October wins over 1100m and 1200m at the track respectively and was last seen crossing just 0.4 lengths away second to Finnomony at home on November 28.
Stuart Kendrick’s Sunshine Coast-based Show A Heart filly Banda Spice will be on the short seven day turnaround if accepted after the young three-year-old finished sixth to Secret Saga in last weekend’s Listed Mode Plate (1200m).
She was beaten three lengths in the black-type clash at her seventh Doomben run where she is yet to win but has twice run third.
Other notable nominees include Kelso Wood’s Gai Waterhouse Classic winner Real Surreal, Grant Marshall’s in-form Newcastle visitor Slots and fellow Sydney raider Typhoon Jolie for Peter & Paul Snowden.
The 2015 Just Now Fillies and Mares Handicap field and barriers are due out on Wednesday so stay tuned.
