Excess Knowledge gained ballot-free entry into the race that stops a nation through success in the Group 3 Lexus Stakes (2500m) over the weekend, but the classy Gai Waterhouse-trained stayer has been forgotten in betting markets for the featured event at Flemington this afternoon as has drifted to Melbourne Cup odds of $31.

Excess Knowledge returned to racing this time for a credible fifth in the Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m) on August 15th before a tough run for seventh behind the likes of Magnapal in the Listed Heatherlie Stakes (1700m) on August 29th.
Receiving an ideal tune-up for the Melbourne Cup in running second in each of the Listed Harry White Classic (2400m) and Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) prior to the Lexus Stakes, the Monsun entire opened at a quote of $21 for success this afternoon but has received only a sprinkling of bets on his way to current odds.
Waterhouse is thrilled with Excess Knowledge’s condition and believes the five-year-old is a far better chance for success than his current Melbourne Cup odds suggest, owing largely to his allocation of only 51kgs.
“Dropping to that luxury weight, he’ll be more than competitive,” Waterhouse said this week.
Excess Knowledge has been a strong and consistent performer since first appearing on course competitively for John Gosden in 2012; producing five wins and a further seven minors through only eighteen career starts.
Transferring to the care of Waterhouse prior to his 2014 campaign, Excess Knowledge debuted to Australian ran for minors in a pair of Sydney minors before running seventh in the Group 2 Shannon Stakes (1500m).
Kept to only a light campaign through the recent 2015 Sydney Autumn Carnival, Excess Knowledge won a Kembla Grange minor over 1300m before beating a talented field to the line in the Group 3 Doncaster Prelude (1500m) on March 28th.
Further to his to his current quote of $31 for success, Excess Knowledge can be taken at 2015 Melbourne Cup odds of $8.60 to finish in the first three.
