Robert Smerdon’s Group 3 winner The Bowler is tipped for more black-type success in Melbourne on the weekend after opening top fancy for the Weekend Hussler Stakes 2015 at Caulfield Racecourse.

Set to run as Caulfield Guineas Day Race 4 at 2:45pm (AEST), this year’s $120,000 Listed Perri Cutten Weekend Hussler Stakes (1400m) features a final field of 10 hopefuls set to face off in the handicap clash.
Leading the latest Weekend Hussler Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au, who are offering an incredible Best Tote or SP + 20% on all 10 Caulfield races this Guineas Day, at $3.90 is Testa Rossa five-year-old The Bowler.
After winning the Group 3 RA Lee Stakes (1600m) in Adelaide in mid-May, The Bowler ran a first-up sixth to Bounding in the Group 3 The Heath 1100 (1100m) in late August before a sixth last time out again this time beaten under two lengths in the Listed Testa Rossa Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on September 19.
He has had six runs at the track he returns to for Saturday’s Weekend Hussler Stakes, but is yet to record a Caulfield win.
Following The Bowler in the Weekend Hussler Stakes odds is then Rugged Cross ($5.50) jumping from barrier four with 58.5kg in the form of Brad Rawiller on his back.
Prepared by Darren Weir, the Cape Cross seven-year-old is after his first win since the Listed Winter Stakes (1400m) won in the wet in Sydney back on July 18.
Since then he has run top four in his latest four assignments including behind Good Value over this track and distance when beaten just a nose late last month.
Also under double figures for the win are the 60kg returning top weight Amovatio ($6) for Chris Waller who was last seen winning the Listed Winter Championship (1600m) at Flemington in July, Robbie Laing’s seven-year-old Tristram’s Sun ($6.50) in barrier three for jockey Craig Williams and veteran nine-year-old Good Value ($7) who beat Rugged Cross home last time out.
There are no real roughie shots in an open Weekend Hussler Stakes market this season with other livewire chances at more generous odds including the Paul Beshara-trained Adelaide raider Richie’s Vibe ($11), Lindsay Park’s four-time winner at the track Pago Rock ($11) and the Team Hawkes-trained son of Lonhro Mecir ($12).
The genuine market mover meanwhile is also the outsider in betting, money coming for the rails-drawn Eximius ($31 into $26) to atone for a dead last when 14th over 1800m at Caulfield last time out back in late July.
