21 talented sprinters appear in nominations for Saturday’s Group 3 WJ Healy Stakes (1200m) on the Gold Coast; highlighted by the inclusion of some of the Brisbane Winter Carnival’s most exciting short course specialists.
Dothraki failed to make anything of a competitive impact when eighth in the Listed Ortensia Stakes (1100m) at Scone first-up on May 16th but is sure to have taken priceless condition from the competitive hit-out ahead of the 2015 WJ Healy Stakes.
A proven Gold Coast performer, the son of Mossman charged home to win the Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) at the beginning of a strong 2014 winter campaign.
Posting arguably career-best form to date over a brief summer campaign, Dothraki won the Whyte & Gilmour BM95 (1100m) before finishing second to Our Boy Malachi in both the Listed Starlight Stakes (1100m) and Listed Razor Sharp Handicap (1200m); returning to the paddock after boxing on for third in the Listed Canterbury Classic (1200m) on December 27th.
Classy local Excellantes will carry winning form into the 2015 WJ Healy Stakes and will figure as more than a chance for success should he draw a favourable barrier on Wednesday.
Posting a commendable 12 wins and 16 minors through 53 career starts so far, Excellantes won the Listed Falvelon (1200m) at Doomben in late February before placing a credible fourth when blocked for a run in the Listed Chief De Beers (1110m) following a brief freshen-up.
Having boxed on for a credible fourth in the Listed Ascot Handicap (1200m) a fortnight prior to his win in the Listed Hinkler Handicap (1200m) on June 6th, the son of Falvelon figures as one of only two nominations for trainer Robert Heathcote on Saturday.
Classy Godolphin runner Barbed was unable to make anything of a competitive impact in his own racing return but undoubtedly figures as one of the 2015 WJ Healy Stakes’ classiest nominees.
Posting three wins and five minors through 18 career starts so far, Barbed followed-up a credible fourth in the Listed Lightning (1100m) on October 18th with a standout victory in the Canterbury Classic.
Having returned to the paddock after placing sixth in the Listed Abell Stakes (1200m) on February 6th, the son of Canny Lad will be perfectly suited to the 1200m course and Gold Coast conditions.
Dances On Stars has performed well over 1200m at the Gold Coast this time and figures as a leading chance of success for Gerald Ryan this weekend after being included in 2015 WJ Healy Stakes nominations.
Having clearly reached his best over the Brisbane Winter Carnival in recent years, Dances On Stars was given little chance for success amongst the classy field of the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) on April 25th but produced an exceptional turn of foot in the final straight to finish third.
Having since finished towards the right end of the field in both the Listed Glasshouse Handicap (1300m) and Group 2 QTC Cup (1200m), the son of Snitzel appears in the right condition for a first three finish on Saturday.
The 2015 WJ Healy Stakes final field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday.
