Final acceptances may have only closed this morning but already an early scratching from the 2014 Starlight Stakes field has left a dozen hopefuls for the Rosehill Gardens race this weekend.
One of three early summer black types on the Sydney race card on Saturday, this year’s $100,000 Listed Starlight Stakes (1100m) originally drew a final field of 13 sprinters.
Anthony Cummings opted to scratch Holder Sunset soon after acceptances however, the Shamardal mare not having raced since July.
There are four last start winners among the Starlight Stakes hopefuls this year including the Gerald Ryan-trained Dothraki in barrier eight.
Blake Shinn has the ride on the in-form Mossman four-year-old, the gelding having won the Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) back in May.
He’s had just the two runs this season, the most recent of which was a Benchmark 95 win over this track and distance on November 15.
Dothraki carried 60kg to victory that day with Shinn in the saddle and so will appreciate the drop down to 58kg on the weekend.
He’s the second heaviest weighted hope in the Starlight Stakes this year following the Lionel Cohen-trained six-year-old Aeronautical into barrier two with 59kg to carry.
The other last start winners aside from Dothraki meanwhile are the Bart & James Cummings-trained Shamalia with the outside barrier to overcome, Senta De Noche and Our Boy Malachi for Team Hawkes.
Drawing the second widest gate is an early blow for boom Top Echelon six-year-old Our Boy Malachi who has won 14 of his 16 career starts to date including his last three on the trot.
His latest effort was an easy run from the inside alley over this track and distance on November 1 when defeating Zaratone by over a length in an effort he’s out to repeat here but stepping up to stakes’ company.
Other in-form hopes include the Gary Moore-trained Straight Gold and Lilliburlero for David Payne.
Stratum six-year-old Straight Gold comes off a third behind Atmospherical in a Listed 1000m sprint down the Flemington straight from Crown Oaks Day with 58kg, three kilos more than Tommy Berry will ride him on this weekend.
Lilliburlero meanwhile has gate four with Glyn Schofield booked for the ride on the five-year-old Redoute’s Choice mare.
She’s down in class here having raced exclusively in Group company going back to the autumn, her latest effort being a credible third behind Vain Queen in the Group 3 GH Mumm Stakes (1100m) at Flemington on November 6.
