The Group race headlining the racing action at Corbould Park on Saturday is the Sunshine Coast Guineas 2014, betting tips for the three-year-olds’ showdown found right here.
There is a capacity field engaged for this year’s $125,000 Listed XXXX Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m) with the first emergency Fast Arrow now in the mix after the scratching of the Chris Waller-trained favourite Mamwaazel.
New top fancy in the updated Sunshine Coast Guineas betting markets is then the David Lawlor-trained Architect into $4.80.
They have to overcome a wide barrier 17 draw and also handle the mile which they failed over last time when 13th to fellow SC Guineas hope Hopfgarten in the Group 3 Gunsynd Classic (1600m) in late April.
A veteran for their age with 31 runs behind them already, the Bel Esprit gelding still has plenty of admirers though after pulling out a brilliant late burst at Eagle Farm last Saturday to win over 1200m running away.
The two other single figure fancies are then Group 2 performed Tale Of The Cat gelding Palmera Lad ($5) and Rob Heathcote’s Gunsynd Classic winner Hopfgarten ($6.50) coming off a fourth over the distance earlier in the month.
So are these three the ones to beat?
Or is there an upset Sunshine Coast Guineas result on the cards from the likes of Craig Smith’s last start Dalby winner Performia ($13), the Kelly Schweida-trained L’Entrecote ($13) or even super-consistent local Fast Arrow ($26) now they’re in the official starting line-up?
#19 Fast Arrow ($26)
We are tipping an upset from local Mick Mair-trained Lion Heart gelding Fast Arrow now they are in the field. They’ve won three times at the track, the most recent of which was over 1200m in May on a Heavy (8). Well performed in Slow – Heavy going and there’s rain predicted for Saturday which will aid their cause. Need to handle the mile but were far from disgraced over 1400m here last start when beaten under a length. Up in class and distance but a consistent track specialist deserving of their shot.
#2 Hopfgarten ($6.50)
Like the favourite Heathcote’s Mossman gelding is widely drawn but time to overcome. Won three on the trot over 1400 – 1600m at Eagle Farm in the autumn on everything from a Good (3) to a Heavy (9) so can handle all conditions. The distance is also a non-issue as they won over it beating a few of these in the Group 3 Gunsynd three back. Failed next run but improved when back up to the mile for the Listed Daybreak Lover Stakes (1600m) on June 7 when fourth to Sir Moments. Fresh with three weeks between runs, can handle the class and mile is ideal.
#1 Architect ($4.80)
Distance is a query as they didn’t handle it last time but trainer is confident they will this time even from the wide gate (17). On the seven day back-up but won easily over 1200m at Eagle Farm with a big late finish that should see them power through 1600m this time with Tim Bell staying on.
