A classy field of 17 has been nominated for an appearance in this weekend’s Listed Daybreak Lover (1400m) at Brisbane’s Eagle Farm Racecourse; highlighted by several notable performers over the 2014 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival so-far.
Breaking through for an impressive victory in the Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1400m) last weekend, talented three-year-old Sir Moments has been included in nominations for the 2014 Daybreak Lover.
Contesting an impressive total of four races wins and one minor place from just nine competitive appearances to date, Sir Moments has returned to the track in peak condition this time in; comfortably winning the Ethel Kerrison Birthday bm85 (1200m) first-up before finishing an unlucky sixth amongst classy competition when blocked for a run in the Group 3 Fred Best Classic (1350m) prior to the Queensland Guineas.
Having also performed well over the 2013 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, trainer Steven O’Dea is confident his stable’s star can continue his impressive run of form this weekend.
Also included in nominations for the 2014 Daybreak Lover, Wordplay will be aiming to overcome a disappointing start to her current campaign and return to the form that delivered an impressive run of results throughout her maiden racing preparation in spring.
Debuting with an impressive performance for second in the Australian Turf Club Handicap (1300m) in August the Fastnet Rock filly secured a maiden race victory in just her second appearance on course when comfortably beating out a classy field in the TAB Iphone App Plate (1400m), before registering another impressive performance when second in the Group 3 Spring Stakes (1600m).
Continuing to build in class and form on her way to a strong run for fourth in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m), Wordplay has seemingly been unable to handle the late pace of either of her two race starts in 2014; finishing 16th in the Queensland Guineas last weekend.
Despite the forgettable run of results, trainer Anthony Cummings is confident the step back in class of the Daybreak Lover is exactly what Wordplay needs to return to good touch this weekend.
Returning the track in great form this season, Hopfgarten arguably leads the local charge in the 2014 Daybreak Lover, having secured four wins and a place from his seven starts since returning to racing.
While unable to overcome an awkward jump and poor running position in the Group 3 Fred Best Classic (1350m) last time out, the Mossman gelding completed an impressive run of four consecutive victories prior, including the Group 3 Gunsynd Classic (1600m) on April 26th.
Trainer Gai Waterhouse is poised to be offered twice the chance of success in the 2014 Daybreak Lover, having nominated talented stable mates Liberty’s Choice and Longma for an appearance at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
Despite claiming just one race win since debuting in the autumn of 2013, Liberty’s Choice has claimed an impressive nine minor places, and is in line to return to the winner’s circle this weekend after finishing second in the Inglis 3.y.o Guineas (1400m) and Queensland Guineas most recently.
Claiming two wins and two places from nine competitive race starts to date, Longma was disappointing when unable to handle the late pace of the Queensland Guineas last weekend, but is more than a chance is allocated a favourable gate at Wednesday’s barrier draw.
