Brisbane-based jockey Chris Munce has been confirmed to take the ride on well-trialled gelding Belltone in this weekend’s Group 2 QTC Cup (1300m) at Brisbane’s Eagle Farm Racecourse, and is confident of his chances having partnered the eight-year-old to notable success over previous seasons.
Saddled by renowned Queensland trainer Kelso Wood, Munce told AAP he is pleased to return to the reigns of Belltone following an impressive performance first-up on May 3rd, and is confident a positive run will translate into a Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) berth on June 7th.
“Kelso has been good to me and so has Belltone” Munce said.
“He isn’t getting any younger but his last run was a good one and he is second-up on Saturday which is when he usually fires.
“Provided he goes OK, and he does have a wide allow on Saturday, I will probably ride him in the Stradbroke.”
Contesting an impressive record of 10 wins and 11 places from 38 competitive race starts to date, Belltone was a standout performer throughout the 2012 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival; finishing second in the last edition of the QTC Cup before securing back-to-back victories in the Listed Eye Liner Stakes (1350m) and Listed Glasshouse Handicap (1400m) most notably.
Continuing to build in class throughout 2013, which included an impressive victory in the Group 3 BRC Sprint and second to standout performer Boban in the Group 3 Bill Ritchie Handicap (1400m), the Brahms gelding returned to racing in 2014 with an impressive turn of foot to finish a fighting fourth in the Listed P.M’s Cup (1300m).
Allocated barrier 12, Belltone is currently given slight hope of success in betting markets for the 2014 QTC Cup, offered at generous odds of $14 for success, or $4.40 to run a place.
Having returned to racing in peak condition this season, Kiwi raider Sacred Star has opened as and maintained outright favoutism for the QTC Cup, currently offered at a quote of $4.
