Fresh off their upset Golden Slipper Stakes triumph with star young filly Mossfun, the father-and-sons Hawkes training team will be out for another juvenile victory this weekend with the unraced Kaepernick opening favourite for the 2014 Kindergarten Stakes odds at Royal Randwick.
Kicking off a huge nine-race, all-Black Type Doncaster Mile Day card on Saturday, this year’s $200,000 Group 3 Widden Kindergarten Stakes (1100m) field has drawn 11 hopefuls.
Three of those make their race debut here including the current $4.50 favourite in the Kindergarten Stakes betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au, Kaepernick.
The Fastnet Rock colt has drawn wide with barrier eight on Saturday, Corey Brown to ride, but is still being touted by the bookies as the one to beat in a successful start to their career.
They earned top spot in the odds after catching the eye in a Rosehill barrier trial win on March 31 over the 900m that they won by two lengths.
Unsurprisingly it’s a wide open market for the Kindergarten, six of Kaepernick’s 10 rivals also under double figures to win with:
#9 Donelle ($5.50) – Gai Waterhouse-trained Not A Single Doubt filly has had three starts to date, most recently a solid fourth when defeated under one and a half lengths by subsequent Golden Slipper third placed Bring Me The Maid in the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) in the wet on March 29, she’ll improve off that and this is a step back in class, the form on that race looks good and she had a luckless run from the inside alley when swamped so from four here should get a lovely run
#6 Redoutable Heart ($7.50) – Gate two for Chris Waller’s Redoute’s Choice colt in their debut here on the back of a Rosehill trial win (900m) from March 21, that was their third trial and they have been ridden by Hugh Bowman each time who stays on for the Kindergarten
#8 I Am Snippety ($7.50) – Unlike the other $7.50 chance this Canberra raider has had plenty of racing and are the most experienced in the field, two wins already including their last start victory at Wellington which was by a massive six and a half lengths over 1100m from barrier 13 of 14 so can overcome gate 11 here when they race at Randwick for the first time in a notable class rise
#7 Washington Heights ($8) – Last of the debutants here, Gerald Ryan’s Commands colt trialled at Rosehill for a narrow win on March 31 so has a chance in this field of unknowns
#2 Hallowed Crown ($8.50) – Bart & James Cummings-trained Street Sense colt won their race debut on March 26 at Randwick’s Kensington track (1150m) so get their chance on the course proper for some good prize money here second-up
#1 Klammer ($9) – Second best tried in the field, this Ryan-trained son of Snitzel is yet to finish out of the money in their four career runs to date with a win and three third place finishes, victory was at Canberra in February and they also ran third to Lucky Raquie in the Listed Black Opal there two back before their good third behind Time For War in the Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes at Rosehill two weeks ago
