Saturday at Rosehill Gardens presents two-year-olds with a final chance of making the Golden Slipper cut this autumn, and one filly bound for the $3.5 million classic via the 2014 Magic Night Stakes is Clifton Red.
A total of 16 young fillies make up the field for this year’s $175,000 Group 2 IRT Magic Night Stakes (1200m), the Group 1 Golden Slipper lead-up to run as Rosehill Race 4 at 2:10pm (AEST).
Of those heading towards the world’s richest juvenile’s race next Saturday back at Rosehill, the shortest priced in the Golden Slipper odds at Ladbrokes.com.au is David Hayes’ daughter of Sebring Clifton Red ($41).
Drawn in gate eight for the weekend, Clifton Red is already a Group 3 winner having taken out the Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes on debut at Flemington back on March 8.
She failed to produce the same sort of effort next start when racing in Sydney however, only managing to finish four lengths away seventh behind Golden Slipper favourite Earthquake in the Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m).
Clifton Red then is out for atonement here and should have improved from a look at the track and distance.
There are six other Magic Night Stakes hopefuls this year who also already boast a win on their record including Gerald Ryan’s duo Peggy Jean (barrier five) and Tetsuko (barrier 13).
Myboycharlie filly Peggy Jean has run top three in her trio of career starts to date including a win over Boomwaa in the Inglis Classic at Randwick in January and she comes off a Rosehill trail victory over 900m from March 21.
Tetsuko meanwhile looks one of the top chances here having had two black type runs already.
Her debut was a second behind Alpha Miss in the Listed Gimcrack Stakes at Randwick last October, before her return with a win at the Kensington track on February 26.
She was also competitive last time out two weeks ago when third behind Believe Yourself in a decent effort in the closing stages of the Group 2 Sweet Embrace Stakes (1200m).
Ryan plays a strong hand in this year’s Magic Night field having also accepted for Lonhro Plate third placed Aerobar in the extreme outside barrier (16) and Lanikai (barrier six).
Other fillies with a win to their name then include the Peter Moody-trained Bring Me The Maid to be ridden by Cox Plate winning hoop Chad Schofield, the James & Bart Cummings-trained Sultry Feeling (barrier two) and the John Ramsey-trained Unknown Destiny.
Sebring filly Bring Me The Maid won her debut at Flemington on March 1 beating home Husson Eagle in the Listed Sports 1000 before her Moonee Valley third on March 14 under the lights in the Listed St Albans Stakes; Saturday her first run in Sydney.
Unknown Destiny meanwhile has won their past two on the trot with provincial wins at Muswellbrook and Armidale and shoots for win number three here in her maiden city appearance.
