Lucky Hussler stamped himself as a sprinter to watch with an impressive victory in the Group 3 George Moore Stakes (1200m) at Doomben on December 7 and will have the opportunity to prove that was no fluke this Saturday.
The Husson gelding showed talent as a younger horse, taking out the Group 3 Vo Rogue Plate (1350m) as a two-year-old and finishing third in both the Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1400m) and Listed Daybreak Lover (1600m), and has now started to live up to his potential under the care of new trainer Kent Flaming.
Lucky Hussler is set to face a similar field to the one that he met in the George Moore Stakes; with placegetters Morning Captain and Startsmeup as well as Benny’s Buttons, Doubtfilly, Phelan Ready, Gundy Son and Rocket To Glory all set to back up in the Listed event.
One horse coming from a different form line is Paul Messara-trained Mahisara who has performed well in two race starts since returning to the races towards the end of the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival.
The More Than Ready entire finished a credible fifth behind Richie’s Vibe in the Listed MSS Security Sprint (1200m) at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day before winning the Group 3 Sandown Stakes (1400m) for the second year in a row at Caulfield on November 16.
Mahisara is no stranger to racing in Brisbane having previously won the 2011 Listed Centenary Classic (1400m) at Eagle Farm and performed well in the Group 2 Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m), Listed Dalrello Stakes (1200m) and the Group 3 BRC Sprint (1350m).
The only other horse taking winning form into the Lough Neagh Stakes is Steve Tregea-trained Love Rocks who took out the Greenslopes Private Handicap (1200m) at Eagle Farm on November 23 by a dominant three and a half lengths before winning the Brisbane Touch Association Handicap (1200m) in equally as impressive fashion at Doomben on December 7.
The Stratum gelding will be making his black type racing debut and will also be stepping up to 1350 metres for the first time in his career but based on his past two starts goes into the race as a serious winning chance.
The final field for the 2013 Lough Neagh Stakes will be released on Wednesday and a betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au will follow shortly thereafter.
