Ibicenco Tops 2013 Tattersall’s Cup Field & Weights

Peter Moody’s imported stayer Ibicenco heads a 13-horse field for this Saturday’s Tattersall’s Cup 2013, one of three Group race highlights of Eagle Farm’s Tattersall’s Tiara Day race card.

Formerly prepared in Europe by Luca Cumani, Ibicenco first raced in Australia last Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival where their three race campaign culminated with a good win in the Listed Sandown Cup (3200m).

It was a nice consolation prize for connections after the Shirocco stallion failed to make the field for the major spring cups.

Sent to Moody after the spring to be prepared in Melbourne the rising six-year-old has had two runs over the mile this year in Brisbane most recently crossing ninth to Tokamak in the Listed Strawberry Road Handicap (1600m).

This Saturday they get their chance to improve on that however when the genuine stayer steps up to a more suitable distance for the $200,000 Group 3 Carlton Draught Tattersall’s Cup (2200m).

To carry the 58kg topweight with Luke Nolen in the saddle Ibicenco has come up trumps with barrier two and could be set for their first win of the season here.

Following Ibicenco in the Tattersall’s Cup field and weights are then two horses on 57kg with the Brian Smith-trained Rothera (barrier eight) and Leon Corstens’ former Group 1 winner Zabeelionaire (barrier three).

Local Tobougg seven-year-old Rothera has been racing handy this time in including their second to subsequent Eagle Farm Cup winner Quintessential in the Group 3 Chairman’s Handicap (2100m) in the wet last month.

They are also sure to appreciate a step back in class here after their last start fifth when two and a half lengths off Moriarty in the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m) on June 8.

Zabeel four-year-old Zabeelionaire meanwhile won last year’s Group 1 SA Derby (2500m) in Adelaide but hasn’t been inside a winners’ stall since, the galloper coming off a sixth in the Eagle Farm Cup where they failed to beat home any other runner.

Other notable Tattersall’s Cup hopefuls then include Lloyd Kennewell’s Adelaide Cup winner Rialya out to improve on their eighth in the Ipswich Cup last Saturday, the Michael Moroney-trained Shenzhou Steeds with the extreme outside barrier and the only last start winner in the mix Endor.

The Graeme & Debbie Rogerson-trained Duelled five-year-old Endor has won three of their past four starts and should get a gun run from barrier one with Kerrin McEvoy riding them on the 54kg minimum here.

Formerly prepared in New Zealand they have had two runs since joining Rogerson’s new Sydney base the first a disappointing dead last in the Group 3 Premier’s Cup (2200m) at Doomben.

They improved going back in class on May 31 however at the Sunshine Coast cushion track to win a benchmark 85 over 2150m.
