The first Group race of Doomben 10,000 Day has been run and won this afternoon at Doomben Racecourse with the currently John Thompson-trained Sookie giving the soon-to-be extinct Patinack Farm a double taking out the $150,000 Group 3 Glenlogan Park Stakes (1350m) ahead of the Tattersall’s Tiara 2013.

A bumper field of stakes performing fillies and mares faced off in the 2013 Glenlogan Park Stakes including red hot favourite Arinosa from the Sydney stables of Chris Waller coming off two big Group wins in Sydney.
However the flying grey failed to get a clear run sitting seventh one of the rail early before getting caught in between runners coming into the turn and never looked a chance until the 400m when she did well to run in for fourth behind Casino Prince filly Sookie.
Earlier Patinack Farm and Thompson took out a Class 6 plate with up-and-coming filly Peron and Sookie joined her stablemate in the Doomben winners’ stall four Race 4.
Given a gun run from in-form jockey Tim Bell, Sookie settled into third having moved up quickly to sit just off the leader Bound To Blush who attempted to lead all-the-way.
John O’Shea’s Strategic four-year-old Bound To Blush had every chance up front, a position they held right up until the final couple of hundred metres when Sookie peeled off their back and took the lead.
On the line it was Sookie ahead of Bound To Blush with market mover Diademe in a brave third, Murray Baker’s consistent New Zealander having their first run down under.
Thompson, who is hoping to get back some of the quality horses currently under his care after they go under the hammer and are sold off as Patinack Farm disbands, said the most likely option with Sookie was to take her through the usual lead-ups into the $500,000 Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 22 – a race he won 12 months ago with Pear Tart.
“She’s a nice honest filly,” he said.
“She ran two weeks ago (at Eagle Farm) and we thought she could have won until the rain came (and she finished eighth to Doubtfilly).
“On top of the ground she’s a better filly.
“She ran here today instead of the 3yo’s race and got the job done.
“I’d say now she pushes on through the mares’ races to the Tatt’s Tiara.
“She goes well, she’s a promising filly.”
Winning hoop Bell agrees and said the win was particularly nice as the speed wasn’t there for her today.
“She’s a lovely filly…she’s just such a fabulous ride,” he said.
“A lot of her best wins are when she comes off the speed a little bit.
“(Today) I put her straight into the box seat and I was pretty confident coming into the straight.”
Arinosa meanwhile is still expected to continue onto the $1.36 million Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm in two weeks where with a more spacious track and hopefully a wider draw than her gate two barrier today she’ll be back on the outside of them and ready to bounce back.
