Power Princess Chance for Singapore Sprint 2013

The famed KrisFlyer International Sprint in Singapore next year could be on the agenda for Simon Miller’s classy Perth mare Power Princess after her excellent second to the undefeated Barakey in the Winterbottom Stakes over the weekend.

Six-year-old Marwina mare Power Princess, first-up winner of the Group 3 Prince of Wales Stakes (1200m) at Ascot last month, raced in Saturday’s Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes over the same track and distance and was a very competitive runner-up finishing just half a length off champion local five-year-old Barakey who is now 11 from 11 and drawing comparisons to Australia’s turf darling Black Caviar.

The eye-catching Winterbottom performance from Power Princess meanwhile has seen talks between Miller and the mare’s connection as to whether to accept an invitation to the Group 1 KrisFlyer International Sprint at Kranji on May 19 next year.

“The owners go to the KrisFlyer every year and they’d love to go,” Miller said.

The Winterbottom was just the second elite level assignment for Power Princess who first raced in Group 1 company when a brave third behind the world’s best mare Black Caviar in the Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville back in April.

Her Perth Summer Racing Carnival campaign meanwhile will conclude Saturday week with a run in the $125,000 Group 3 AJ Scahill Stakes (1400m), a race won again by 2009 champ Grand Nirvana 12 months ago.

“We have been invited for the KrisFlyer and it’s definitely an option,” Miller said.

“We put it on the backburner to concentrate on the Winterbottom and Scahill and we’ll sit down and discuss it after this campaign.”

Should connections choose to go to Singapore for the KrisFlyer it will likely be the swansong campaign for the current $632,750 earner which is one of the reasons Miller and co may be swayed to take her overseas.

“Realistically you don’t get the chance to travel overseas for a race like that and this time next year she’ll probably be at stud,” he said.

“While she’s going this good and keeps improving it might be worth it. She’ll either go there or to Adelaide again.”
