Tight 2012 Red Anchor Stakes Betting Market

The bookies and punters are having a hard time separating the chances in the Red Anchor Stakes 2012 this Cox Plate Day with four of the nine three-year-olds engaged in the race known as the Telstra PhoneWords Stakes under double figures in the markets.

Running as Moonee Valley Race 4 at 2:45pm (AEST) this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Telstra PhoneWords Red Anchor Stakes (1200m) attracted a final field of nine gallopers and there is no clear favourite in the clash.

Currently it is Gerald Ryan’s Group 3 winning filly Cavalry Rose who holds narrow favouritism in the Red Anchor Stakes odds at bookmaker.com.au paying $3.40.

The consistent daughter of Charge Forward has had three runs this time in hitting peak fitness last start when overcoming barrier 11 of 12 to win the Group 3 Thoroughbred Club Stakes (1200m) on Caulfield Guineas Day.

She has been scratched out of Friday night’s Crockett Stakes in favour of this and with a good run from gate six will be hard to beat.

“She has a good rating for consistency and these conditions sit really well with her,” Ryan said of the set weights race.

Cavalry Rose is followed in Red Anchor Stakes betting by:

  • #6 Essay Raider ($3.90) – Adelaide gelding has had just two runs to date, races outside of SA for the first time here, bred for more distance being by a Zabeel mare but can rise to the occasion here with a bit of luck at career start number three
  • #8 Saturn Rock ($4.40) – Likely to scratch out here in favour of a run on Manikato Stakes night against easier opposition, was heavily backed favourite in the Thoroughbred Club Stakes but could only manage to finish third to Cavalry Rose and would see a similar result here if she runs on Saturday
  • #1 Chosen Moment ($5.50) – Anthony Freedman-trained Choisir colt has raced competitively up to a mile already, ran a good first-up second at this track and distance on September 28 and expect improvement on that

Another longer priced hopeful also in the mix is then Paul Perry’s Hidden Warrior ($13) who broke their maiden status at career start number four at Newcastle two back before their last start second over 1100m at Canterbury.
