This Saturday on Caulfield Cup Day a collection of Myer Classic-bound mares will face off in the Tristarc Stakes 2012, Robert Smerdon’s four time Group 1 winner Mosheen heading the list of nominations taken today.

Myer Classic-bound Mosheen heads the 2012 Tristarc Stakes nominations
Won 12 months ago by glamour mare More Joyous, the $220,000 Group 2 Yellowglen Tristarc Stakes (1400m) has this year drawn 22 early entries including Fastnet Rock four-year-old Mosheen.
After two initially disappointing runs this time in following minor throat surgery that ruled her out of a Cox Plate bid this spring, Mosheen returned to form on October 6 at Flemington with a slashing win in the Group 2 Blazer Stakes (1410m).
Other Blazer Stakes runners among the Tristarc Stakes nominations include third placegetter Miss Stellabelle from the stables of Gai Waterhouse, and the Peter Snowden-trained Lonhro mare Raspberries (4th) who won the Scone Cup during the winter.
Snowden has also nominated for his Octagonal six-year-old Shannara out to improve on her first-up ninth in the Group 2 Premiere Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on Epsom Day.
Another smart last-start winner in the mix meanwhile is the Chris Waller’s Premiere Stakes champ Red Tracer who defeated Satin Shoes by a length in the October 6 feature first-up, the smart sprinter bringing her good winter form in Brisbane through to her five-year-old season.
Other notable hopefuls then include the Peter Moody-trained King’s Rose who resumed after having undergone the same throat surgery as Mosheen with a second to Hallowell Belle in the Group 2 Gilgai Stakes (1200m), and the Guy Walter-trained duo of Appearance coming off a first-up third in the Group 2 The Shorts and dual Group 1 winner Streama making her Melbourne debut.
Streama has had two runs this time in, most recently running a below par sixth in the Premiere Stakes, with Walter confident the Australian Oaks champ can improve as she goes up to the 1400m on Saturday.
“I thought her last run was a little disappointing but it was the first time she had remained at 1200 metres second-up,” Walter said.
“I think she’s looking for a bit further.
“There were a couple of mares, like Emotional Circus, that came from behind her and ran past her so that was a little bit uncharacteristic.
“We’ll be looking for her to bounce back in the Tristarc and show she’s on track for the Myer Classic.”
The $500,000 Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) is one of the features at Flemington’s Victoria Derby Day on Saturday November 3 and is the grand final aim for the bulk of the Tristarc Stakes nominees.
The Caulfield Cup Day final fields are due for release on Wednesday excluding the day’s marquee event, the Caulfield Cup 2012 field out tomorrow.
