Kelso Wood’s Group 1 winning Snitzel colt Sizzling returns to the track this weekend when they take on a small but savvy field of fellow three-year-olds in the inaugural edition of the Blue Sapphire 2012.

Sizzling returns in the 2012 Blue Sapphire at Caulfield this Saturday
Set to run as Race 2 at 1:05pm this Caulfield Guineas Day, the $250,000 Catanach’s Jewellers Blue Sapphire (1200m) may not hold black type status for its first edition on Saturday, but the 10 horses engaged in the field are top class.
In gate eight with Chris Munce to ride is the ultra-consistent Brisbane raider Sizzling who will make both their three-year-old and interstate debut in the Blue Sapphire.
A winner of five of their eight starts to date, Sizzling won all four of their stakes assignments during the winter with Munce in the saddle including the Group 1 TJ Smith (1600m) last time out on June 9 in a thrilling finish with subsequent Stan Fox Stakes winner Kabayan.
Sizzling’s main rival in the Blue Sapphire is then the Gerald Ryan-trained Snitzel filly Snitzerland in gate four with Corey Brown to ride.
Runner-up to the undefeated champ Pierro in the Group 1 Golden Slipper during the autumn, Snitzerland has had three runs for three wins this time in all at Group level.
She was last seen putting one and three quarter lengths on her closest rival Hoss Amor in the Group 3 Champagne Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on September 28 and is definitely one of the ones to beat here.
Two other last start winners are then engaged in the Blue Sapphire field for 2012 with the Phillip Stokes-trained Fire Thunderbolt who will be ridden by Craig Williams, and Lankan Rupee in gate two – both undefeated with two wins up their sleeves so far.
California Dane grey from Adelaide Fire Thunderbolt won their debut at Morphettville back in February before Williams partnered them to an eye-catching three length victory in the Listed Ice Cream Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on March 3.
Mick Price’s promising Redoute’s Choice colt Lanka Rupee meanwhile debuted with a win at Cranbourne on September 6 before beating a decent field by two and a half in a 1000m open plate at Caulfield on September 22.
Price will also be represented in the 2012 Blue Sapphire by Exceed And Excel gelding Eximius in barrier three with Glen Boss to ride.
