Little Doubt in Beaded Tiara as Favourite Draws Three

There is now even less doubt that this year’s Tattersall’s Tiara won’t belong to Beaded come the end of Group 1 racing this Saturday after Peter Snowden’s wonderfully consistent mare drew ideally in barrier three for the lucrative fillies and mares showdown.

Beaded

Tattersall's Tiara favourite Beaded has drawn ideally for Saturday's race with barrier three

Set to start the short-priced favourite in the $500,000 Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday, Lonhro five-year-old Beaded was one of the big winners in the barrier draw for the feature coming up with gate three of 15.

Beaded has been the picture of consistency over her 21-start career to date, Snowden’s star mare only finishing out of the money once when running fourth in last year’s Stradbroke Handicap to Black Piranha.

This year Beaded was again given the chance at scoring victory in Queensland’s richest race, her final run before the Tatt’s Tiara being a brave second beaten in the final stride by boom three-year-old Sincero in the $1 million Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) on June 11.

Before the Stradbroke, Beaded finally became an elite level winner as she stormed home in a powerful finish to defeat Love Conquers All in the Doomben 10,000 (1350m) on May 28.

She has now raced at the highest level seven times, Beaded’s Group 1 runs producing an impressive record of one win, two seconds, three thirds and a fourth place finish.

With her top record, ideal barrier and last year’s Winter Stakes winning jockey Corey Brown in the mount, Beaded looks hard to beat on Saturday and Snowden is confident she will head to the spelling paddock a dual Group 1 winner.

“She’s been a very good mare but she’s not in any way over-raced,” Snowden assured.

“This will be the last run of this preparation, but whether she goes on, we’ll just have to wait and see.”

Having broken her Group 1 duck, with a second likely to follow on Saturday, Beaded is now a very valuable prospect for breeding but retirement plans for the $1.4 million earner have not been confirmed by connections.

“We’ve had a talk about it (retirement) but nothing will be decided finally until after Saturday,” Snowden said.

Other Tattersall’s Tiara acceptors that came up with a good barrier draw for this year include John Sargent’s promising Kiwi filly St Germaine one outside the favourite in four, last-start Dane Ripper Stakes winner Hurtle Myrtle due to be ridden by ace Sydney hoop Brenton Avdulla from barrier six and dual Group 1 winner Yosei who will have the inside running from gate one.

Victorian filly Yosei, looking to bounce back from her disappointing 14th behind Hurtle Myrtle in the Dane Ripper on June 4, will be ridden by Michelle Payne in the Tattersall’s Tiara.

On Tuesday Payne reunited with Stuart Webb’s three-year-old for a track gallop on the course proper at Eagle Farm where Yosei was the real eye-catcher running 1200m and recording a smart 35.7 seconds for the final 600m of work.

“She hit the line really well,” Eagle Farm track observer Les Green said of Yosei.

“I’d be surprised if her form doesn’t lift this week on the back of that gallop.”
