Trainer Jan Bowen has planned an assault on a number of black type events for Jest Crewsin, while the five year old remains under the radar of New South Wales Handicappers.
Bowen believes that Jest Crewsin can confirm himself as one of Sydney’s top off-season stakes class sprinters with a win in the listed June Stakes at Randwick on Saturday.
“It’s a good time for him to be in form while he is down in the weights,” said Bowen.
Jest Crewsin is a listed winner, which means he gets penalties in benchmark races, which has led Bowen to target the black-type events that are available in what is considered Sydney’s off season for racing.
“He gets into these races a lot better than the benchmark races where he will be asked to carry too much weight.” Bowen said.
Jest Crewsin won the Candana Cup at Randwick in impressive style at his last race start, beating home the likes of Unanimously, Prince Braeman and Royal Discretion. All of whom are nominated for the June Stakes
Jest Crewsin was ridden a treat by jockey Robert Thompson, although Bowen confirmed that the horse would be closer to the speed this time in.
“I don’t like the horse getting back that far in his races but there wasn’t much Robert could do.
“As it turned out, he was able to save that little bit of ground on the turn. If he decided to make his run out wide, we probably wouldn’t have won.” Bowen said.
Bowen also said that she believed the horse was nearing peak fitness after a disappointing run at Scone before the last start win.
“I rushed him to get ready for the Scone Carnival. Looking back now the Scone race probably came two weeks early for him.” Bowen said.
Jest Crewsin will again be partnered by Robert Thompson in the June Stakes.
Thompson, 53, has ridden more race winners than any other jockey in Australian racing history.
“He’s still among the best jockey’s going around and the fact he doesn’t push for rides makes his achievements even more remarkable,” said Bowen.
Jest Crewsin will carry 53.5kg in the June Stakes.
Border Rebel received 59.5kg for the race, however his nomination was only a precaution in case he missed a start in the Stradbroke Handicap.
The June Stakes is shaping up to be a hotly contested race. Proven performers such as Pinwheel, Royal Discretion, Montana Flyer and Squamosa are among the nominations for the $100,000 race.
