Sepoy has drawn barrier 10 for the Golden Slipper on Saturday
Long-time favourite to win the 2011 Golden Slipper at Rosehill this Saturday, the Peter Snowden-trained Sepoy needed a good gate in today’s Golden Slipper barrier draw to maintain his popularity with the punters and has come up with barrier 10.
After winning his first four career starts all at stakes level including the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on February 26, Elusive Quality colt Sepoy has sat at the top of the Golden Slipper odds since markets opened.
Last start Sepoy suffered his first career loss running second to Smart Missile on a wet track at Rosehill on March 19 in the Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m), but so far the defeat has done little to dent the star’s dominance in the Slipper markets.
What will dramatically affect Sepoy’s chances of becoming the 2011 Golden Slipper winner is if the race is run on a track rated Dead or worse.
Sepoy’s barrier 10 draw for the Slipper is the widest gate he will have started from to date.
So far the furthest out Sepoy has had to jump from is barrier seven, which he started from to win the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m) at Caulfield on February 12.
After the Golden Slipper gates were released today, Sepoy is likely to drift in the Golden Slipper betting especially considering his biggest threat Smart Missile drew ideally with barrier five.
The Anthony Cummings-trained Smart Missile is the only runner in the Golden Slipper field to have beaten Sepoy when he scored an upset win in the Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) on March 19.
In the Todman Smart Missile started from barrier two, but the son of Fastnet Rock also won the Listed NSW Breeders Plate (1000m) at Randwick on debut last October from barrier six.
With the form and now the draw, punters can expect bookies to slash the price on Smart Missile to win the Golden Slipper and possibly even install him as equal favourite with Sepoy.
