Elite Falls upsets favourite Satin Shoes to win the 2011 Reisling Stakes
Going out as the second favourite in the odds behind Satin Shoes, the John O’Shea-trained Elite Falls was too strong in the wet today and put an end to Satin Shoes’ unbeaten succession of runs.
Finally able to turn the tables, Elite Falls was third-up for the season having finished second to Satin Shoes in both the Listed Widden Stakes (1100m) and the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) this prep.
But in the rain and with the extra distance of the Reisling, Elite Falls fuelled claims for a Golden Slipper start on April 2.
After Peter Snowden’s Blue Diamond Stakes winner Sepoy suffered his first defeat in five starts in a massive boilover in the Todman Stakes earlier today, it was another loss for the punters in Rosehill Race 3.
Clarry Conner’s Silver Slipper Stakes winner Satin Shoes came away well from the barriers and lead on the inside from Defiant Dame.
Soon after jumping David Payne’s More Than Ready filly Defiant Dame snared the lead from the favourite.
Eventual winner Elite Falls was given a beautifully timed and patient ride by Jim Cassidy who settled her second last and seemed unfazed by the widening margin the leaders held over his mount.
Defiant Dame maintained the lead going onto the straight before Satin Shoes hit the front with 200m to go.
After being taken to the outside in a confident move by Cassidy, Elite Falls made up lots of ground to challenge.
Satin Shoes and Elite Falls battled it out, but the favourite just didn’t let down in the wet and Elite Falls was able to pull clear and score a beautiful 1 ¼ length victory on way to the Golden Slipper.
Roughie of the field, the Chris Waller-trained Fast And Sexy ran an eye-catching third a further length away after coming from last in the field.
With today’s suitable conditions and the momentum to win running away, Elite Falls took their career record to two wins from five starts for close to $390,000 in prize money.
Before today’s results Sepoy and Satin Shoes sat one-two in the Futures Golden Slipper 2011 Field & Odds at Luxbet, but there is likely to be a dramatic turnaround in the markets after both two-year-olds were defeated.
Elite Falls was rated an $18 chance in the Luxbet Golden Slipper odds before today’s win.
