It’s not often we get excited about a $21 chance going into a race but after seeing the fixed price odds for the 2011 Oakleigh Plate at Luxbet we certainly took note.
Of course the favourites include the likes of Catapulted and Star Command but towards the bottom of the list was a little mare running much better than her odds suggest.
Varenna Miss is from Redoute’s Choice and trained by Tony Noonan.
The four-year-old has had just the five starts in her career and is yet to miss a place including three victories.
Two of those victories have come on the Caulfield track and both have been over the same distance run in the Oakleigh Plate.
She opened this preparation with a win and last start fought on well to hold second place.
While yes, it’s no doubt a huge step up in class and she’s never raced on an occasion as big as this, you can have no doubts Tony Noonan will have her prepared brilliantly and she’ll get a solid ride from Stephen King.
She also drops two kilos down to 53kg for this race the equal lightest in the field.
Her barrier isn’t good out in 14 but if she pushes forward like she likes to do there’s no reason she can’t settle close to the pace.
While we won’t go as far as to say she should be a favourite to win the Oakleigh Plate we are adamant she’s a genuine threat and certainly a much better horse than her current $21 odds suggest.
If you like the sound of Varenna Miss as an each way chance this weekend those odds can be found at Luxbet, but be quick because they may very well drop considerably before the race jumps.
