Atomic Gains Momentum for 2011 Blue Diamond Stakes Upset

Atomic

Atomic is a serious chance to cause an upset in the 2011 Blue Diamond Stakes

While in the early markets all the money was on raging favourite Sepoy to win the 2011 Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday, lightly-raced Atomic is starting to emerge as a serious contender for the $1 million showdown.

Peter Snowden’s talented colt Sepoy has drifted out from $1.60 to $1.65 in the Blue Diamond Stakes betting markets at Luxbet today.

Still the firm favourite, it seems some punters are considering an upset Blue Diamond Stakes result and history is on their side.

Odds-on favourites have a disastrous record in the Blue Diamond Stakes throughout history, just ask rival trainer Lee Freedman.

Hall of Fame trainer Freedman has a hat-trick of Blue Diamond Stakes wins to his name, only one of which was by a favourite.

Alighi saw success as the $2.15 Blue Diamond favourite in 2004, while Freedman’s other two Blue Diamond Stakes winners were real roughies with Knowledge starting at $21 in 1997 and Danelagh paying $13 for their win the following year.

This Saturday Freedman will saddle-up two horses in the 2011 Blue Diamond Stakes field of 14 with Atomic and Masthead.

Winner of their only start to date, Commands colt Atomic is considered as Freedman’s best chance of a fourth Blue Diamond victory.

After running home to a smart win in the Listed Chairman’s Stakes (1000m) at Sandown on debut earlier this month, Atomic is now the $10 third favourite in the Blue Diamond Stakes betting through Luxbet.

The punters have been eager to take Atomic at his double figure price, backing him in from $13 to $9 this morning before he drifted out to a very backable $10.

Atomic has come up with an ideal barrier two draw for his Blue Diamond start on Saturday, due to be ridden by Craig Newitt.

Freedman is confident Atomic will present a genuine challenge to Sepoy when they face off in the Blue Diamond Stakes.

Atomic’s stablemate Masthead is not without their own claims despite what their $31 Blue Diamond Stakes odds suggest.

Written Tycoon colt Masthead has had three career starts to date, well-tried for a shot at the Blue Diamond Stakes.

On debut in the $250,000 Inglis Banner (1000m) at Moonee Valley Masthead ran second to Elite Falls in October last year.

They went on to finish a credible fourth behind fellow Blue Diamond Stakes rival Arctic Command in the Group 3 Maribyrnong Plate (1000m) at Flemington on Emirates Stakes Day, beaten less than a length.

Resuming for the season, Masthead was able to score a gritty win right on the line in the $250,000 Inglis Premier (1200m) at Mornington on February 15 from a wide barrier 10 draw and carting 57kg.

For the Patinack Blue Diamond Stakes, Masthead drops down to 55.5kg and despite their wide gate 13, is an excellent Place Chance.

Dwayne Dunn has the mount aboard Masthead, the jockey vying for his fifth Blue Diamond Stakes win having ridden four consecutive Blue Diamond Stakes winners from 2005 to 2008.

If Sepoy salutes on Saturday he will be just the second odds-on favourite in the Blue Diamond Stakes history to win joining Rancher who started the shortest-priced Blue Diamond Stakes winner of all time at $1.40 in 1982.

Even if Sepoy does get beaten in a massive win for bookies around the country, there is little chance he won’t finish in the Blue Diamond Stakes Trifecta.

While odds-on favourites don’t like to win Victoria’s premier two-year-olds’ race they do like to place with Triscay ($1.80F) finishing third in 1990 and Desirable ($1.80F) coming in second back in 1976.

Whether you want to get behind Sepoy to make it a Blue Diamond Stakes clean sweep or fancy an upset with one of the longer priced contenders, Luxbet have the best Blue Diamond Stakes odds so visit them today.
