Miss Gai Flyer wins the 2011 Kevin Hayes Stakes on CF Orr Stakes Day
The punters backed the wrong Peter Moody-trained filly in the Kevin Hayes, all the money going on the favourite Zelsnitz.
But it was her longer-priced stablemate and Moody’s other representative in the Kevin Hayes Stakes field who produced the run of the race, Miss Gai Flyer paying a very juicy $20 for the win at Luxbet.
It was a promising return to form for the daughter of Flying Spur, Miss Gai Flyer up with the best of them as a two-year-old before a disappointing spring campaign last year.
Today however she showed a big improvement returning as a bigger and stronger horse and came up with a sensational victory.
Zelsnitz begun quickly over on the outside, having to work hard from her wide barrier to move across the field and take the lead ahead of She’s Got Gears.
Meanwhile jockey Jason Maskiell settled Miss Gai Flyer beautifully in third just behind the leaders.
On the straight Zelsnitz was still ahead by a length but quickly faded as Miss Gai Flyer came up hard and fast running down her more fancied stablemate to race clear of the field.
Once she got over the favourite Miss Gai Flyer was never going to get beaten.
It was an impressive victory as she pounced to put her rivals away, making the rest of the runners look second rate in her shadow as she put a big gap on them after letting go.
The time was also sensational, Miss Gai Flyer winning in 1:09.3.
On the line Miss Gai Flyer was two lengths clear of the Robbie Griffiths-trained Miss Elvee with Pinker Pinker a gallant third just a further half-head back.
Miss Gai Flyer has now won three of her seven career starts.
Moody also commented post-race that Blue Diamond Fillies Prelude winner One Last Dance had pulled up super and it was onwards and upwards to the $1 million prize with the unbeaten filly on January 26.
Next the race punters have been waiting for is finally here with the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes lighting up the Caulfield track at 4:30pm (AEDST).
Typhoon Tracy remains the firm favourite in the Orr Stakes betting markets so get behind her at the best price through Luxbet now!
