The first of the three feature Magic Millions races at the Gold Coast today has been won by quality Toowoomba galloper Bold Glance who scored a tight victory in Race 5, the $328,000 Magic Millions Cup (1400m).
The Norm Hilton-trained Sequalo gelding Bold Glance paid a juicy $16 through Luxbet for today’s win and it was a big effort for the five-year-old who held off Zero Rock and favourite Captain Sonador for the prize.
Away well, Bold Glance hit the front early but was quickly overtaken by classy mare Zero Rock before Facile Tigre began to lead the field.
In a keenly contested showdown on the straight many of the runners in the field moved up to challenge including Fifteen Carat and Phelan Ready on the inside.
Chris Munce briefly got Zero Rock in front but Bold Glance ponced and held on for the victory.
Zero Rock was second in a photo-finish with third placegetter and the punters’ favourite Captain Sonador.
In a bit of post-race drama Fifteen Carat in the battle for the line bumped into another horse and fell to the ground along with jockey Craig Williams.
Both were on their foot soon after with no injuries reported as yet.
Today’s Magic Millions Cup winner Bold Glance has now won seven of their 24 career starts, the winnings from this afternoon boosting their prize money to over $476,000.
Next up at the Gold Coast 2011 Magic Millions Race Day is one of the big ones, the $1 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas at 4:00pm (AEDST) and with the track now upgraded to a Slow 7 the conditions are getting better and better for the highlight events.
