2010 Gosford Gold Cup Field, Form & Odds

Today the next black-type race on the Australian racing calendar will take place at Gosford in New South Wales with a quality field of stayers set to contest the $125,000 Listed Gosford Gold Cup (2100m).

A field of 13 gallopers, following the scratching of #13 Zampara, will take to the track in the 2010 Gosford Gold Cup with the Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes-trained Rainbow Styling the current favourite to win.

Winner of the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield back in September, Rainbow Styling opened in the Gosford Gold Cup betting at $6 but has been heavily backed into $4.60 at Luxbet.

Set to start from barrier six with champion hoop Nash Rawiller aboard, Rainbow Styling drops well back in class today following their other spring runs that have included a second to Precedence in the Group 3 JRA Cup (2040m) fifth to Ginga Dude in the Group 3 David Jones Cup (2000m) and then a last start seventh behind So You Think in the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m).

In a wide-open race, other favoured runners in the Gosford Gold Cup odds include the Gai Waterhouse-trained stable mates Devils Arcade and Kontiki Park both paying $6, Kimillsy at $6.50 and Dealer Principal paying $7.50.

Consistent four-year-old mare Devils Arcade has come up trumps with barrier one in today’s showdown and with an imposing record of five wins and two placings from their eight career starts looks a top chance.

Waterhouse’s other runner Kontiki Park is also drawn well in barrier four, money coming in for the five-year-old gelding backed in from $7.50 to $6 after a brilliant second to eventual Melbourne Cup runner-up Maluckday in the Tatts Cup (2400m) at Randwick on October 16.

Kontiki Park is also well down the weights with just 53kg today after carrying a hefty 59.5kg to finish third over 2400m at Rosehill last start.

Well-bred Danehill Dancer mare Kimillsy is another runner coming into the Gosford Cup at career best form, the five-year-old having placed third to Thankgodyou’rehere in the Hawkesbury Cup (1600m) last start and drawn ideally in barrier three today.

Last year’s Gosford Gold Cup winner Spinney placed second in the 2009 Hawkesbury Cup before taking out the Gosford feature 12 months ago meaning Kimillsy has come via the right path.

Spinney is also back to defend their title today, but with a wide barrier 13 draw and inconsistent recent form including a last place finish in this year’s Hawkesbury Cup, there has been no love for the Peter Snowden-trained eight-year-old who is at long $31 odds to win today.

The only other runner at single figure odds for the Gold Cup is the Anthony Cummings-trained Dealer Principal, the Flying Spur gelding coming off some mixed form but still getting attention from the punters because of their class.

The 2010 Gosford Gold Cup is scheduled as Race 7 at Gosford today, Thursday November 18, and is due to jump at 4:55pm (AEDST).
