UPDATE! – Click here to get the latest Melbourne Cup Odds for the 2011 Melbourne Cup.
The 2010 Melbourne Cup winner is French stayer Americain who beat home Maluckyday and red hot favourite So You Think at just their second start in Australia, in the $6 million Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) as Race 7 at Flemington today.
The 150th Melbourne Cup played out just as the rain got a little heavier at Flemington, Once Were Wild set the early pace leading the field, but was unable to hold on as the field bunched on the turn.
Geelong Cup winner Americain sat three deep with cover, poised and ready to make the move, peeling away when the time was right and ridden to perfection by international jockey Gerald Mosse.
It was a fierce battle down the straight, So You Think moving up on the outside to briefly take to the lead with 250m to go.
But six-year-old Americain quickly became a danger and challenged the Bart Cummings’ trained superstar.
On the line the Alain de Royer Dupre-trained Americain beat home The Lexus Stakes winner and second favourite Maluckyday with So You Think holding on in a gallant third.
Favourite So You Think, the Bart Cummings-trained superstar starting as the shortest priced favourite in many years, was given every chance but couldn’t give the Cups King his 13th Cup.
Instead the Loving Trophy went to the first French-trained Melbourne Cup winner.
Americain has now won eight of their 20 career starts.
