2010 Melbourne Cup Third Declarations Lead by So You Think

Third declarations for the 2010 Melbourne Cup were taken by Racing Victoria this morning, leaving 47 horses vying for a spot in the 24-horse final field for the $6 million handicap feature at Flemington on Tuesday November 2.

The red hot favourite and number one on the ballot is Bart Cummings’ ‘Phar Lap of our times’, So You Think, who rose to superstar status on Saturday winning his second successive Cox Plate.

The emphatic win over veteran Zipping and Whobegotyou saw So You Think fly to the top of the order of entry, now exempt from ballot for the 150th Emirates Melbourne Cup.

Other horses at the top of the Melbourne Cup ballot order that are assured of a start in the Melbourne Cup Tuesday week include Gai Waterhouse’s Caulfield Cup winner Descarado, reigning champion Shocking and star Queensland galloper Shoot Out.

Runners that were in the first 24 in the elimination order that have been declared non-runners in the world’s richest handicap are Sans Frontieres, Zabrasive, Doctor Fremantle and Vigor.

Following third declarations, there are a number of notable stayers that are still in danger of missing the ‘race that stops the nation’ including Precedence (30th), Mourayan (31st), Herculian Prince (32nd), Alcopop (33rd) and Linton (34th).

The Bart Cummings-trained Precedence received his second Melbourne Cup penalty on Saturday after an emphatic win in the Moonee Valley Cup, but the Zabeel gelding is still unassured of a start.

This Saturday Flemington’s Victoria Derby Day features three races offering a Melbourne Cup ballot exemption with the winner of the Victoria Derby, Mackinnon Stakes and The Lexus Stakes given an automatic entry into the marquee race of the year.

The 2010 Melbourne Cup field of final acceptors will also be announced on Saturday at 5:00pm (AEDST) after the results of the Derby Day races.

The updated Melbourne Cup betting odds are due to be released by Luxbet shortly, so get ready to get in on the action and lock in your favourites at the hottest price in Australia.
