Sensational Queensland galloper Buffering has won Race 4 at Randwick beating a classy field of rivals in the $175,000 Group 2 Urbis Roman Consul Stakes (1200m).
Robert Heathcote’s Mossman gelding Buffering was backed in from $4.20 into the $3.80 second favourite pre-race and rewarded its connections with a dominant performance to claim another emphatic victory.
Buffering was first away from the gates and took a great early lead over its rivals including the $2.90 favourite Slater who was slow away and never really in it.
Two fillies trailed the leader as Georgette Silk and Obsequious moved up in the field early.
The Peter Snowden-trained Obsequious put a gallant challenge on Buffering coming into the home straight, but Buffering hung on to lead-all-the-way finding plenty at the 100m mark, pulling away and coasting to victory.
On the line it was Buffering ($3.80), ridden to perfection by Nash Rawiller, one and three quarters of a length ahead of Obsequious ($5), who really tried hard but just didn’t have the gears to run down the leader, with Parriwi ($15) in third a further two lengths back.
Parriwi did their best work in the final stages doing well to come in and finish in the top three.
Three-year-old Buffering, purchased for just $22,000 by connections, has been in red hot form their nine career starts have resulting in six wins and three minor placings, earning in excess of $500,000 with today’s winnings.
The next race at Randwick today is Race 5 – the $400,000 Group 1 Coolmore Flight Stakes (1600m) – due to jump at 2:10pm where More Strawberries will start the favourite.
