On Saturday six-year-old mare Alverta claimed an impressive win in the $600, 000 Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill, giving trainer Paul Messara his first Group 1 success.
Alverta was retired to stud last spring, but after being able to get into foal Messara took a chance on the horse that gave him his maiden metropolitan win and his first stakes victory, reviving her racing career this year.
It proved a brilliant choice as Alverta ($18) then gave the Scone-based trainer his long awaited Group 1 win on Saturday when she defeated the Gai Waterhouse-trained Gold Water ($17) by two lengths.
The pre-race favourite Grahame Begg’s Palacio De Cristal ($5.50) was caught up in the back of the field and did well to charge through for third.
Alverta will now be aimed at next month’s Group 1 Doncaster Mile at Randwick.

It was an action-packed meeting at Rosehill on Saturday. Five other Group races took place on the day with Gai Waterhouse taking out the other scheduled highlight, the $400, 000 Group 1 Ranvet Stakes, with her impressive gelding Theseo.
The $300, 000 Group 2 Reisling Stakes saw unbeaten filly Military Rose clock her fifth career win from as many starts, the impressive victory seeing her soar to the top of the betting markets for the $3.5million Golden Slipper on April 3.
Meanwhile David Payne’s two-year-old Masquerader maintained his own unbeaten record in the $300, 000 Group 2 Todman Stakes; six-year-old mare Hot Danish proved she still has it when she won the $150, 000 Group 2 Canterbury Stakes; and Peter Moody saw some success on the day despite his top chance in the Coolmore Classic Set For Fame being scratched from the race when his colt Tickets won the $150, 000 Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes.
