The final field for the $400, 000 Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill on Saturday has been announced, with 12 weight-for-age stars set to start in the feature event.
Last start winner of the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes, the Gai Waterhouse-trained Theseo is backing up with a run in the 2010 Ranvet Stakes.
The six-year-old gelding, however, has drawn the far outside barrier 12 on Saturday and will need to work hard in the staying test if they are to secure back-to-back Group 1 wins.
Chris Waller’s Pentire gelding, Rangirangdoo, who placed second to Theseo in the Chipping Norton is also lining up in the Ranvet Stakes on Saturday. Ragirangdoo has displayed brilliant form of late. He won the Expressway Stakes back on February 6 and since then was runner-up in two Group features.
Rangirangdoo will start from barrier eight in the Ranvet Stakes when he clashes with Theseo once again.
South Australian stayer Alcopop is another top contender for Saturday drawn in barrier six. The Jake Stephens-trained five-year-old burst onto the scene in October last year when he took out the Herbert Power Stakes before running a gallant six in the Melbourne Cup.
This autumn the Jeune gelding has failed to find the same form, placing a listless tenth in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) last start. A genuine stayer, he will enjoy the increased distance of the Ranvet Stakes and stands a solid chance.
Other notable starters in the 2010 Ranvet Stakes include Lee Freedman’s Speed Gifted, the imported six-year-old looking to improve from his first start back from a spell that saw him finish dead last in the Chipping Norton, and The Nigel Blackiston-trained Littorio coming off a solid fifth place in the Australian Cup last start.
Speed Gifted and Littorio have both drawn well and are expected to improve this run, starting from barriers three and two respectively.
There are nine great races taking place at Rosehill on Saturday including six Group status events.
Highlights of the day will be the $300, 000 Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m), $300, 000 Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m), $150, 000 Group 2 Canterbury Stakes (1300m), $150, 000 Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes (1500m) and the scheduled highlight, the $600, 000 Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m).
The 2010 Group 1 Ranvet Stakes will run at 3:30pm as race six on the card.
