  • 1st: #5 Yulong Prince
  • 2nd: #7 Cascadian
  • 3rd: #9 Rock

Ace horseman Chris Waller made it a Group 1 double on Derby Day with former South African Group 1 winner Yulong Prince saluting at the top level in Australia claiming the 2020 Kennedy Cantala. It was a hot pace in the race set by Buffalo River and the swoopers from the back were the best over the line, Yulong Prince just holding off the challenge by Cascadian with Rock back to the inside for third.

Race 7 (3:45pm) – Group 1 $2,000,000 AAMI Victoria Derby (2500m)

  • 1st: #3 Johnny Get Angry
  • 2nd: #6 Hit The Shot
  • 3rd: #5 Young Werther

AFL Premiership winning coach Dennis Pagan pulled off a masterstroke taking out the 2020 VRC Derby inside his first 12 months training horses with Johnny Get Angry ($21) relishing the step-up to 2500m and running a huge race with the blinkers on. Apprentice Lachie King retained the ride and got the job done on the 20/1 outsider who was too strong late defeating a fast-finishing Hit The Shot, while Young Werther ran third as the beaten favourite just needing a little more race experience.

Race 6 (3:00pm) – Group 1 $1,500,000 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m)

  • 1st: #14 September Run
  • 2nd: #12 Swats That
  • 3rd: #2 Wild Ruler

The brilliant Chris Waller-trained filly September Run was too good for the boys in a standout performance to win the 2020 Coolmore Stud Stakes, her third on the trot at the Flemington track with Craig Williams in the saddle. Displaying an outstanding late burst of speed, September Run quickly put the result beyond doubt defeating Swats That in an all-filly quinella while the Sydney colt Wild Ruler was the best home of the boys.

Race 5 (2:20pm) – Group 1 $1,000,000 TAB Empire Rose Stakes (1600m)

  • 1st: #6 Shout The Bar
  • 2nd: #12 Odeum
  • 3rd: #14 Forbidden Love

The Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Shout The Bar ($31) was given a centimetre-perfect ride by ace hoop Damien Oliver who guided the Vinery Stud Stakes winner to an extremely narrow victory in an upset 2020 Empire Rose Stakes result. In a tough performance, the double-figure roughie denied last-start Thousand Guineas winning filly Odeum back-to-back Group 1s, holding in a diving photo-finish, while Forbidden Love ran third in the first Group 1 on VRC Derby Day.

Race 4 (1:40pm) – Group 3 $200,000 Lexus Hotham Stakes (2500m)

  • 1st: #1 Ashrun
  • 2nd: #5 Sound
  • 3rd: #2 Brimham Rocks / #7 Future Score (Dead Heat)

The Andreas Wohler-trained German raider Ashrun improved on his lead-up fourth in the Geelong Cup to secure the final slot in the $8 million Lexus Melbourne Cup field on Tuesday via an enormous performance coming from last on the turn to sweep round the entire field and win the 2020 Lexus Hotham Stakes field carrying the 61kg top weight. Kerrin McEvoy rode the international into the ‘race that stops a nation’ with Ashrun just holding off the luckless Sound, while there was a second dead-heat for third on Derby Day this time between Brimham Rocks and Future Score.

Race 3 (1:00pm) – Group 2 $300,000 TAB Stakes (2000m)

  • 1st: #4 Kemalpasa
  • 2nd: #3 Order Of Command
  • 3rd: #8 Bold Star

The Richard Jolly-trained Kemalpasa was eye-catching in a wonderful sprinting display to go back-to-back in the 2020 Linlithgow Stakes. The horse went up from 53kg last year to 58.5kg in the event, run as the TAB Stakes, but was ridden to perfection by Craig Williams who had the horse up on speed for the all-the-way victory. There to be run down, in the end nothing caught him and Kemalpasa held on to defeat Order Of Command and Bold Star. Perth’s Group 1 sprints and January’s Magic Millions Carnival in Queensland are potential targets for the now $700,000 earner.

Race 2 (12:20pm) – Group 2 $300,000 G.H. Mumm Wakeful Stakes (2000m)

  • 1st: #9 Victoria Quay
  • 2nd: #1 Personal
  • 3rd: #10 Tyche Goddess

Tony & Calvin McEvoy’s up-and-coming Dundeel filly Victoria Quay knocked off a host of VRC Oaks-bound hopefuls with her gutsy win in the 2020 Wakeful Stakes on Derby Day thanks to another brilliant ride by the flying Jamie Kah. Still looking a little green down the famous Flemington straight, she was still too strong late holding off the Thousand Guineas runner-up Personal with Tyche Goddess in third. Victoria Quay will bypass the Group 1 $1 million VRC Oaks on Thursday and instead is being targeted for the SA Oaks next May.

Race 1 (11:40am) – Group 3 $250,000 Network 10 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m)

Crosshaven Horse Form (Photo: Ultimate Racing Photos) | Races.com.au

  • 1st: #1 Crosshaven
  • 2nd: #3 Aysar
  • 3rd: #2 Endanger / #8 Horrifying (Dead Heat)

The first of 37 races over the 2020 Melbourne Cup Carnival has been run and won with the Lindsay Park stable celebrating the ideal start with a quinella in the Carbine Club Stakes over the mile. Last start Caulfield Guineas fourth-placed Crosshaven led the field around and controlled things up front, holding in a thrilling final furlong when joined up front by stablemate Aysar. Well-backed by the punters, Aysar lay down the challenge, but Crosshaven was too tough, the $80,000 yearling fighting back for a gutsy win. In a gap back for third there was a dead-heat between Endanger and Horrifying.
