The Vanity Winner Bonvicini to Take On Boys in Australian Guineas 2020

A run against the colts and geldings back at Flemington in the 2020 Australian Guineas later in the month could be on the cards for the progressive Bonvicini after her upset win in the Group 3 $160,000 The Vanity (1400m) on Black Caviar Lightning Day.

A daughter of Myboycharlie prepared by the in-form training duo of Ciaron Maher & David Eustace, Bonvicini resumed racing in the 2020 The Vanity as a $26 outsider in betting.

Winner of the Listed Morphettville Guineas (1600m) over the mile last September in Adelaide, the up-and-coming bay was last seen running just a half-length back fourth in the Group 2 Moonee Valley Fillies Classic (1600m) on Cox Plate Day.

She put the writing on the wall for a big autumn campaign with her eye-catching win over the brave Sandown Guineas winner Pretty Brazen (2nd) and the Anthony Freedman-trained Snitzel filly Meuse ($8) in The Vanity results.

Ridden for the first time by Kerrin McEvoy, Bonvicini sat back off the pace set by Lady D’Oro who led along the fence with the speedy Parmie on her outside.

Meuse meanwhile was racing fourth on the outside of Lunar Light, who was over racing in third, with Pretty Brazen tracking fifth.

The short-priced favourite Katalin was never in the race sitting second last throughout and still at the back as they went around the turn.

Meuse begun trucking up with Pretty Brazen three and four deep also joining in once on the straight.

McEvoy came around on Bonvicini who got to the Group 2 winner having swooped on them late enjoying the strong tempo and ran to the line a length in front of Pretty Brazen who was just lacking a little race fitness.

“She showed a really neat turn of foot to pick up and get me into the race,” McEvoy said post-win.

“She pulled away from the favourite (Pretty Brazen) there.

“She’s come back in good order there today.

“Ciaron and David said she’s a bit bigger and stronger this time in. This was my first ride on her but she was a pleasure to ride there I must say.”

A step back-up to a mile for the Group 1 $1.5 million Australian Guineas (1600m) on February 29 could be next for Bonvicini who co-trainer Maher also has pegged as a potential chance for the Group 1 $500,000 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill on March 28.

Recent Australian Guineas winners to come out of The Vanity include Shamrocker (4th in 2011) and Mosheen (2nd in 2012).

Last year’s The Vanity winner Amphitrite (2019) meanwhile went on to run third next start in the Australian Guineas behind the winner, fellow filly Mystic Journey.

The latest all-in Australian Guineas 2020 odds at Ladbrokes.com.au have shortened in from $81 to $31 on Bonvicini.
