The Roses 2022 Winner Barb Raider Firms In Queensland Oaks Betting

The Jerome Hunter-trained Barb Raider is off to the Group 1 $700,000 Queensland Oaks (2200m) Saturday week after narrowly saluting for the punters in The Roses 2022 results in Brisbane.

The visiting Victorian raider returned to winning form, backing up from her close second in Adelaide’s Group 1 Australasian Oaks (2000m) to take out the Group 2 $250,000 The Roses (2100m) at Eagle Farm.

Ridden to perfection by Craig Williams, Barb Raider broke through the pack at the right time on the straight, coming through to hit the front a furlong out and hold off the challengers in a gritty performance.

A winner of five of her 12 career starts, the daughter of Rebel Raider has amassed over $750,000 in stakes.

She is now set for a quick back-up, returning to the Eagle Farm track next weekend for her fourth elite level run in the Queensland Oaks field 2022.

“It was a 10 out of 10 ride, it really was. Magnificent,” Hunter, quick to credit Williams’ ride, told Thoroughbred Central post-win.

“She’s had a month between runs as well, so I think she’ll be even better heading towards the Oaks.

“We have to make sure we get her home and rest her up, but the way she pulls up…she recovers (so well), she’s just a racehorse. She’ll go home and straight away look for her feed.”

The Roses traditionally runs a fortnight prior to the Queensland Oaks over 2000m at Doomben.

This year’s event however was rescheduled due to last Saturday’s abandoned Doomben 10,000 meeting and took place over 2100m.

“It’s not ideal (being on the quick back-up into the Oaks now) but we’re all in the same boat,” Hunter said.

“We had bad weather last week, which could have been a blessing in disguise for us I think because we tried her on a heavy track in Sydney and it didn’t work out.”

Youngstar (2018) was the last filly to complete The Roses – Queensland Oaks double.

All-in Queensland Oaks 2022 odds at Ladbrokes.com.au on Barb Raider to be the next are into $7 and are available in full here.

“Jerome Hunter has a done a marvellous job with her and the owners have the confidence to let him train the horse the best way he can to get that Group 1 win for them and that’s why she’s here seven days before the main target,” winning hoop Williams said.

“I could feel that she’ll benefit from another competition of going right-handed leading into the main race.

“It was (advantageous) for her, so I think she’s only going to springboard off today’s performance.”

Barb Raider ($3.10F) had a neck to spare on the line in The Roses result over Belle Savoir ($8), with the Chris Waller-trained Smirk ($7.50) the same margin away again in a tight finish.
