To Win: #1 Militarize ($2.80 at time of publish) – BET NOW

Great edition of the Caulfield Guineas with a few form lines to consider, but happy to stick with the Chris Waller-trained favourite Militarize who heads south for the first time. The gun Dundeel colt is now a three-time Group 1 winner after flashing from nowhere to score the Golden Rose over 1400m right on the line last start. He is proven at a mile having saluted in Randwick’s Champagne Stakes at elite level as a two-year-old and should appreciate the 1600m again now. The ‘Magic Man’ Joao Moreira retains the ride. The horse needs to answer a few questions like the gate (12) and racing the Melbourne way for the first time, but is the class horse from the best stable going too good to ignore with natural progression now third-up and fit.

The Danger: #4 Steparty ($4 at time of publish) – BET NOW

Really hard to leave out an undefeated three-year-old in this year’s Caulfield Guineas tips. It has been a while since a horse completed the Prelude – Guineas double in Melbourne with Helmet (2011) the last to do so. Still, think this Paul Preusker-trained Artie Schiller colt could come close. He is five-from-five and continues to impress as the bar is raised. He only just got there last time out however, so needs to improve again up to a mile now. Group 1 acid test but he is drawn to get the run of the race from a mid-field gate and has the upside to challenge.

The Roughie: #10 Wolfy ($14 at time of publish) – BET NOW

Have had this Nick Ryan-trained galloper pegged for a big run on Saturday since the field came out. Preferred him at 20/1 earlier in the week, but he remains value into $14 now as the big Caulfield Guineas market mover. Blake Shinn comes aboard the in-form, Kiwi-bred Tivaci colt who chases a third win on the trot. He’ll need to go to another level having only broken his maiden status two back at Sale, but was impressive with 59.5kg over 1420m at Flemington in a BM64 on September 24. Caught the eye there, has been set for this, and a top three run would not surprise as he comes in with confidence.

Caulfield Guineas betting is hugely popular each October when the Group 1 mile race for three-year-olds runs during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.

Pre-field Caulfield Guineas odds are released around nomination stage listing generous all-in prices on the possible runners in the $3 million classic. Many punters prefer to wait for the Caulfield Guineas field and barrier draw before placing their bets to better guarantee their selections will line-up in the feature race of Caulfield Guineas Day.

All of the usual racing markets are open on the Caulfield Guineas each spring like Win, Place and Each-Way odds (described below) as well as exotic Caulfield Guineas betting combinations that are riskier but that pay more if successful.

Important tips to note when it comes to Caulfield Guineas betting include the excellent strike rate of the favourites in the past decade, the strong record trainer Peter Snowden has in the Caulfield Guineas results in recent years, and that history shows gradates out of the Caulfield Guineas Prelude have the best record when it comes to winning the Caulfield Guineas.

Ole Kirk ($4.20 in 2020), Anamoe ($2.10 in 2021) and Golden Mile ($2.70 in 2022) are the latest favourites to win.

There was a notable upset in 2023 with Griff winning at Caulfield Guineas odds of $31.

Standard Caulfield Guineas Bets

Most Caulfield Guineas betting is on win, place or each-way bets. These are the easiest bet types to understand, which is why they are so popular with beginners.

Win – This is a bet on a horse to win the Caulfield Guineas.

Place – This is a bet on a horse to come first, second or third in the Caulfield Guineas.

Each-Way – This is actually two bets of equal size on the same horse: one for the horse to win the Caulfield Guineas, and one on the horse to come first, second or third.

While you can be forgiven for thinking your Caulfield Guineas betting is safer with win bets than exotic bets, you would be wrong. Often exotic bets such as box trifectas and quinellas can be better value.

Caulfield Guineas Quinella

A Caulfield Guineas quinella is a bet on which two horses will finish in first and second place, in any order. In the 2023 Caulfield Guineas Quinella, it wouldn’t matter which order you had Veight and Griff in for the Quinella as both finished in the money.

If there are two runners at comparably low odds in the Caulfield Guineas betting odds, then it is worthwhile considering a quinella, especially if the two runners have wins over one another in previous races at a similar distance.

Caulfield Guineas Exacta

A Caulfield Guineas exacta is a bet on the two horses that will finish in first and second, in exact order. If you had an exacta on the 2023 race with Veight in first and Griff in second, then you would have lost. If you had the exacta in the reverse order, then you would have won.

If you aren’t confident in picking the exacta correctly, then it is better to consider a quinella or a box exacta bet that will cover multiple combinations.

Caulfield Guineas Trifecta

First, a reminder of what a trifecta is for those who are unfamiliar with the bet.

A trifecta is a bet on which horses will place first, second and third – in exact order. For example, a winning Caulfield Guineas trifecta in the 2023 race would have:

1st – Griff
2nd – Veight
3rd – Steparty

The horses are chosen in exact order of their finishing. If Elliptical had come third and Osipenko had come second, this bet would not have won.

Picking a Caulfield Guineas trifecta can be tricky, but there are a few indicator races worth watching for Caulfield Guineas tips. The most obvious is the Caulfield Guineas Prelude, which is only slightly shorter. The HDF McNeil Stakes also marks out potential Caulfield Guineas performers, so keep an eye on the first 5 finishers for Caulfield Guineas trifecta hints.

Most experienced bettors reduce the difficulty of exactly picking the trifecta by placing a box trifecta instead. Learning how to place a box trifecta will improve your Caulfield Guineas betting dramatically.

With a box trifecta, you can choose as many of the runners as you like to come in the first three places. Your bet will be on every trifecta combination of the runners you chose. The only downside to this bet is cost – you are essentially placing individual bets on every trifecta combination you think will happen.

Ladbrokes offer some of the finest odds and exotics on the Caulfield Guineas, including the ability to set total bet maximums on trifectas.

Caulfield Guineas First Four

Like the trifecta and exacta, a Caulfield Guineas First Four bet requires you pick the horses in exact order. You must correctly choose the runners to come in first, second, third and fourth place.

Obviously this isn’t the easiest bet to make, but it can be incredibly lucrative. As with the trifecta, it is easier to place a box Caulfield Guineas First Four bet where you may choose a larger number of horses to finish in the first four places.

Betting with Ladbrokes.com.au will allow you to do this at less expense, giving you more flexibility in planning your Caulfield Guineas betting selections. An example strategy is to place a First Four box bet that includes all the top 5 finishers of the Caulfield Guineas Prelude and the HDF McNeil Stakes that are running in the Caulfield Guineas.
