Nine-year-old gelding Magic Consol is set to return to the track on Saturday in the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield. The fan favourite trained by Paul Preusker looks to defend a three-race winning streak dating back to June last year, capped off by a surprise Group 2 Feehan Stakes victory at Moonee Valley.
Preusker joined RSN’s Racing Pulse on Wednesday to discuss the veterans first-up run this weekend, suggesting a strong showing would go a long way to earning a Wildcard spot in next month’s $5 million All-Star Mile (1600m) at Flemington.
“He come in about 19th or 20th, which the way things ended up, wasn’t too bad.
“He’s a really good miler and he’s coming back with the same workouts and everything looks really positive. If I get in I can do some damage, but it’s just a matter of getting in I suppose” Preusker joked.
Magic Consol has opened at long $51.00 odds with Ladbrokes after drawing barrier 10. It’s no surprise considering the field is made up of quality Group 1 winners like Hartnell, Le Romain, Brave Smash and Redkirk Warrior.
The All-Star Mile Wildcard horses will be announced next Monday, but in the meantime Preusker expects to see plenty of improvement from Magic Consol despite being the oldest runner on the track.
“He’s pretty wound up for this, whether the 1400m just finds him on top a little but will be very interesting” Preusker said.
“He hasn’t lost nothing, his last run yesterday morning was right where he needs to be given that he will improve off this run. Timing is beautiful, he’s landed right in the right spot.”
Brave Smash, who won last year’s Futurity Stakes by three-quarters of a length starts as a $7.00 chance on Saturday, while race-favourite Alizee looks tough to beat backing up from an impressive run in the Group 2 Expressway Stakes at Rosehill for team Godolphin.
