The Godolphin-raced duo of Bivouac and Savatiano are tipped as the ones to beat in Saturday’s Canterbury Stakes 2021 on Randwick Guineas Day.
There are 10 remaining runners in this season’s Group 1 $500,000 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) after the early withdrawal of Prague (10) and markets are dominated by the James Cummings-trained top-level sprinter Bivouac.
Glen Boss retains rides the talented Exceed And Excel four-year-old second-up as the $5.58 million earner returns to Sydney off a fifth to Nature Strip in the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning (1000m) at Flemington.
It is an interesting training move stepping the galloper up from 1000m straight to 1300m for the Canterbury as Bivouac looks to return to winning form.
Runner-up to Classique Legend in the $15 million The Everest (1200m) at his last Randwick run, his latest turf triumph was down the ‘Straight Six’ at HQ when taking out the Group 1 VRC Classic (1200m) during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
Bivouac is a definite second-up performer and looks well-rated as the $2.70 Canterbury Stakes favourite through Ladbrokes.com.au.
As mentioned, the danger also dons the famous Royal Blue silks with Savatiano occupying the second line of Canterbury Stakes betting at $4.50.
Drawn ideally in barrier three with Hugh Bowman in the saddle, this talented daughter of Street Cry won the Hot Danish at Rosehill in the spring before returning to put two lengths on Kolding at the same track in the Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m).
She was very good that day, is proven at Randwick, has been kept fit with a recent Canterbury trial and ticks plenty of boxes to upset her stablemate.
Following closely in an open top half of the market paying $6 is the Hawkes Racing-trained Masked Crusader jumping one closer to the fence in gate two with Tommy Berry to ride.
The progressive Toronado four-year-old has a strong Randwick record (3:2-1-0) and handled a step-up in class here on February 13 winning the Group 3 Southern Cross Stakes (1200m) by two lengths.
This is a much tougher affair however and he has to handle a huge rise in weight from 53.5kg to 59kg so will need to be good.
Other notable hopes representing potential value in the Canterbury Stakes markets this year including last year’s George Ryder champion Dreamforce ($11), Samadoubt ($12) and talented four-year-old Dawn Passage ($12) racing for the first time since a string of placings including a Golden Eagle third last prep.
