Glen Boss Claims Seventh Doncaster Mile Victory

New Zealand galloper Brutal won the Doncaster Mile (1600m) in emphatic fashion at Randwick on Saturday, racing away down the straight to salute for punters that go on board the favourite.

The Hawkes trained three-year-old was caught deep in the early stages of the race, but quickly made up ground down the straight to challenge $21.00 chance Dreamforce at the 100m mark. Brutal’s brilliant turn of foot saw him over the line, while jockey Glen Boss steered home his seventh win in the Doncaster to break his own record.

““I’m in awe of the colt. I know they’ve got light weights and he got himself in a spot but he just cantered to the 1000m and I thought I was on the horse I wanted to be one” Boss said after the win.

“He gave me that real soft feel. He just felt confident underneath me. There was never a point in the race when I thought I was going to lose. He hit a few flat spots on the track but within one stride he came straight back underneath me. He has very good control of his body.”

Brutal improved in his run after placing second behind Winx in last month’s Group 1 George Ryder Stakes. The lightly raced colt by O’Reilly won three straight races at listed level in Melbourne last year and always looked a threat to win Saturday’s feature.

“When you’ve got 49kg you can do that, Boss gave him a gun ride” Michael Hawkes said.

“He just coasted there and let him do what he had to do.”

Brutal now joins the long list of 32 three-year-old’s to win the Doncaster Mile. The win also marked Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes’ first ever victory in the race,

Second place-getter Dreamforce ran a brilliant race leading from barrier five. Hartnell also wasn’t disgraced running third with Hugh Bowman on board, while Alizee struggled on the wet track.

“She’s just not that effective in softish going so it was not her day today” beaten jockey Blake Shinn said.
