Down from 109 first acceptances, the second round of declarations for the Group 1 $5 million Ladbrokes Cox Plate (2040m) feature 66 horses from 32 trainers and include:

  • 4 International Raiders
  • 26 Group 1 Winners
  • 9 Previous Moonee Valley Winners
  • 21 Three-Year-Olds

All-in Cox Plate betting at race sponsor Ladbrokes.com.au is dominated by Russian Camelot for last year’s Melbourne Cup winning trainer Danny O’Brien.

The SA Derby winner and first-up runner-up in Flemington’s Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) is set to have his second run of the spring this weekend as the clear favourite in the Group 1 $750,000 Underwood Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield.

There are only four international Cox Plate horses still in the mix led by the Aidan O’Brien-trained Irish raider Armory, also among the 87 Caulfield Cup 2020 first acceptances taken on Tuesday.

O’Brien won the race back in 2014 with Adelaide and also has his Mackinnon Stakes winning mare Magic Wand in the mix for another shot at the 2040m classic.

The other internationals looking to steal the 100th edition of the Cox Plate are the Joseph O’Brien-trained Buckhurst owned by Lloyd Williams and Aspetar for Roger Charlton.

Matthew Smith’s Makybe Diva Stakes winner Fierce Impact remains in the mix and is engaged in rematch with Russian Camelot in the Underwood Stakes, while there is early money for the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained import Sir Dragonet.

Occupying the second line of pre-field Cox Plate odds at $11, five-year-old Camelot entire Sir Dragonet was a perennial placegetter for Aidan O’Brien running second four times on the trot before transferring to his new Australian stables this winter.

Chris Waller of Winx fame will be looking to return to winning form in the race he stole four consecutive times with the mighty mare with 10 remaining entries including his George Main Stakes winner from last weekend Kolding and beaten favourite in that Verry Elleegant.

Last week’s Group 3 Newcastle Gold Cup winner for Kris Lees Mugatoo, back-in-form Perth-based mare Arcadia Queen and Melbourne Cup favourite Surprise Baby are among the other standout second acceptances for the centenary edition.

Cox Plate third acceptances are open until midday (local time) on Tuesday October 6, 2020.
