2022 Doomben 10,000 Field & Betting Update: Mazu Favourite at Eagle Farm

The money is rolling in for the airborne Peter & Paul Snowden-trained three-year-old Mazu to extend his winning streak with a Group 1 win over the older horses in the 2022 Doomben 10,000 on Saturday.

The opening elite level of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, this year’s Group 1 $1 million Doomben 10,000 (1200m) has been moved to Eagle Farm Racecourse due to the continued heavy rainfall in Queensland’s south east.

It is a quality field of winter sprinters set to face off and the latest Doomben 10,000 odds online at Ladbrokes.com.au have Maurice gelding Mazu at $3.20 to win.

Drawn in gate eight with Sam Clipperton to ride, the in-form youngster has won his past five starts including most recently the Group 2 Arrowfield 3YO Sprint (1200m) at Royal Randwick on April 9.

He was good on a Heavy (10) track there with Clipperton aboard and has won a subsequent trial to keep him fit ahead of his Group 1 test on Saturday.

With the gun wet track form, Mazu is a deserving favourite looking to become the first three-year-old Doomben 10,000 winner since the fellow Snowden-trained Epaulette in 2013.

Co-trainer Peter Snowden also prepared smart mare Beaded for her 2011 win and secured his third Doomben 10,000 trophy, and first in partnership with his son Paul, back in 2017 with subsequent dual The Everest hero Redzel.

Along with the clear favourite, Team Snowden also saddle-up $61 roughie Signore Fox from gate nine in this year’s Doomben 10,000 field.

Outside of Mazu just two other runners are also under double-figures in Doomben 10,000 betting this season with the James Cummings-trained Kementari ($7) and market mover Count De Rupee ($9) considered the dangers.

Drawn a treat in gate three for Nash Rawiller, Godolphin stalwart Kementari has his 41st career start on Saturday.

He’s had four runs at the Eagle Farm track to date for just the one second placing, but was good in Sydney last time out fresh winning the Group 3 Hall Mark Stakes (1200m) in mid-April.

Two-from-two on Heavy tracks, Kementari is not without claims with conditions to suit again on Saturday.

Cummings and Godolphin also saddle-up consistent Dawn Approach colt Paulele at $12.

He was third to Nature Strip two back in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) before his third to Mazu in the Arrowfield, both on Heavy tracks, and has been kept fit with a Hawkesbury trial on May 3.

Paulele missed the kick in the Arrowfield and suffered interference in the TJ, so with a clearer run here is more than capable of atoning at a price.

Count De Rupee is another last start winner, the Robert & Luke Price-trained Real Impact four-year-old having won the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) narrowly at the track and distance a fortnight back.

That followed on from his devastatingly close second to Kementari in the Hall Mark Stakes and he is the early Doomben 10,000 market mover since the venue change from Doomben to Eagle Farm.

A winner of $2.6 million in prize money, Count De Rupee has a 50% winning strike-rate over the six furlongs and is racing well enough to challenge again here.

Resuming out wide in gate $15, Mark Waller’s Kiwi-trained mare Entriviere is the next best in betting at $10.

The daughter of Tavistock has plenty of form down under including her close fourth only 1.64 lengths off Icebath last October in the inaugural $2 million The Invitation (1400m) at Randwick.

She returned at home on New Year’s Day to win the Group 1 NZ Railway Stakes (1200m) and has had two subsequent Group 1 runs across the ditch with Jamie Richards.

At a similar quote, punters can find the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained Generation ($11) who presents fit fourth-up and ready to fire.

The three-year-old Snitzel colt is four-from-eight to date and was last seen running a close fourth behind September Run in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) at The Valley on March 25.

He is yet to officially race on a Heavy track, but won a Rosehill hit-out on a Heavy (8) on April 29 over 1030m ahead of Brisbane debut.

At more generous odds the value runners chasing an upset include the Tony Gollan-trained Magic Millions Sprint winning mare Isotope ($12), Rob Heathcote’s former JJ Atkins winner Rothfire ($14) second-up in gate seven and Danny Williams’ Group 1 The Galaxy winning mudlark Shelby Sixtysix ($34).

The 2022 Doomben 10,000 is set to run as Eagle Farm Race 8 at 4:02pm (AEST) on Saturday’s nine-race card in Brisbane with full markets from Ladbrokes.com.au available here.
