2021 Caulfield Cup Winner: Incentivise By 3.5 Lengths

Spruik stayer Incentivise stamped himself as the best stayer in Australia, Peter Moody‘s Queensland expat flying home for a bullish three and a half length victory in the 2021 Caulfield Cup results from the outside barrier.

In a master class by hoop and horse, the season’s best jockey in Victoria Brett Prebble got Incentivise across from barrier 18 of 18 in this year’s Group 1 $5 million Caulfield Cup (2400m) field running six deep to settle fifth the early stages as Persan led them around at a moderate pace.

“Awkward draw, and there’s 17 other jockey’s that have an opinion on how this race is going to run, so I was mindful of the fact that they weren’t just going to give him a soft lead,” Pebble – now a 32-time Group 1 winner – told Racing.com.

“There was a fair bit of wind out there so I thought I’m definitely going to get cover, even if it’s on the side there, for the first 1200m I just want him to enjoy the race and get into it.

“He doesn’t over-race and he doesn’t waste his energy like some of the others do.”

After impressive wins in the Group 1 Makybe Diva and Turnbull Stakes leading-up to the Caulfield Cup, the brilliant son of Shamus Award was allowed to roll deeper out going forward.

Up into third one off the fence 1600m from home, Incentivise was travelling sweetly with the Herbert Power Stakes winner Delphi just in front having also gotten across from gate 17.

Prebble hit the button at the 800m hooking out three-wide on the heavily-backed favourite getting out into the clear approaching the turn.

With 400m to go Incentivise moved up, hitting the front at the 250m and racing clear for a powerhouse four length victory over the Naturalism Stakes winner Nonconformist who was also on speed racing three deep the trip before finishing off well.

“It’s unbelievable,” winning trainer Moody told Racing Victoria.

“Caulfield was my home for 16 or 17 year and I trained a couple of thousand winners here but never this one so very important to win it.

“We weren’t going to rush it, Brett took his time (from the outside gate) and he found a lovely spot and he knew where he wanted to be down the side.

“He just kept building and super effort.”

In a photo for third to round out the Caulfield Cup trifecta, the brave front-runner Persan held to finish in the money for the Maher/Eustace stable whose Cox Plate hero Sir Dragonet sadly broke down earlier in the day during trackwork.

Fourth then went to David Payne’s class mare, three-time Group 1 winner and last start The Metropolitan champion in Sydney Montefilia who lost few admirers in her big run.

It was a true fairy-tale for the horse bred and still part-owned by connections in Toowoomba, Incentivise having put the writing on the wall for his huge spring campaign winning Brisbane’s Group 3 Tattersall’s Cup (2400m) by 12 lengths in the winter when still with Steve Tregea.

An incredible rise through the ranks has Incentivise as one of the most dominant Caulfield Cup winners in history, just 12 months on from his failed ninth in an Ipswich maiden on debut.

Incentivise has now firmed into $2.80 through Ladbrokes.com.au to go one better and complete the coveted Spring Cups double for the first time since the mighty mare Ethereal (2001) with a win in the Group 1 $8 million Lexus Melbourne Cup (3200m) on November 2 at HQ.

“He came off the bridle a little bit and I showed him the whip before the home turn, and all that’s telling me is, look out Melbourne Cup, he’s going to eat the 3200m,” Pebble warned Incentivise’s potential Melbourne Cup rivals come the first Tuesday of November.
