The Group 1 Lexus Melbourne Cup (3200m) runs as Flemington Race 7 at 3:00pm (AEDT) featuring 24 of the world’s best stayers.

Eight hail from international stables including the two best in Melbourne Cup betting at Ladbrokes.com.au, the Aidan O’Brien-trained duo of Anthony Van Dyck and Tiger Moth.

Can the raiders return to winning form in the world’s richest handicap?

Or will the locals go back-to-back?

All the best Melbourne Cup markets are open now at Ladbrokes.com.au.

Best International Bet: #1 Anthony Van Dyck ($9) – BET NOW

The weight is the issue. Carries the 58.5kg top-weight and history says he won’t win with that. Still, he is a star stayer and was good with the same kilos for second in the Caulfield Cup. Has that Australian run under his belt now and improvement up to 3200m. Hugh Bowman rides from that beautiful barrier three draw and if the horse is good enough, he can do it from there. Go Each Way.

Race Favourite: #21 Tiger Moth ($7.50) – BET NOW

There were plenty that weren’t happy when this horse saluted in a Group 3 in France by four lengths as the odds-on favourite earning a subsequent 2.5kg penalty that saw him make the Melbourne Cup field. Anyway, he’s here now and drops down a very favourable six kilos from that win. This is tougher. He’s only had four career starts and history says no Melbourne Cup winner has had that few a runs before saluting since the 1800’s. That’s a very large hoodoo, but still he starts favourite out wide in barrier 23. Happy to lay.

Best Local Bet: #13 Surprise Baby ($9) – BET NOW

There’s been a hype on this son of the 2009 Melbourne Cup winner Shocking since he ran a luckless fifth to Vow And Declare last year. He did it from out wide with no tempo and that cost him the race as he finished the best of any horse late. This year he goes up a kilo but should get an absolute peach of a run from barrier seven. Last year’s winning hoop Craig Williams comes aboard and there’s options from the gate. The horse has only had two starts since Cup Day 2019. He wasn’t far beaten over 2000m last time out and will be pinging fresh getting up to 3200m. It’s not often a horse wins the Melbourne Cup in their second attempt, but he could go close. Take Each Way.

Best Roughie: #23 Miami Bound ($34) – BET NOW

One of four in the race for last year’s winning trainer Danny O’Brien, including the defending champ Vow And Declare, this 2019 VRC Oaks winner has been forgotten in betting and she looks a very attractive price to run in the money. She earned her spot with that eye-catching Moonee Valley Cup win on Cox Plate Day. This is obviously another level, but she’ll be flying with 51kg and suited to two-miles. Place Chance.

Dangers:

#5 Sir Dragonent ($11) – Can the Ladbrokes Cox Plate winner do it again in just his second Australian start? The distance is the query.

#7 Verry Elleegant ($12) – How good is Chris Waller’s Caulfield Cup winning mare? We’re about to find out. The gate is awkward so she’ll need to be good.

#12 Prince Of Arran ($10) – Already a dual Melbourne Cup placegetter this English raider just never runs a bad race, last start Caulfield Cup fourth included. Barrier one and that last produced a winner in Prince Of Penzance – ridden by Michelle Payne. Can jockey Jamie Kah become the second female hoop to do so from the same gate?
