Race favourite Hanseatic has drawn the inside barrier for Saturday’s Blue Diamond Stakes 2020 at Caulfield as the Anthony Freedman-trained colt looks to be just the second winner from gate one in the past decade.
The Group 1 $1.5 million Neds Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) is the highlight of the weekend’s racing action and features a capacity 16 starters.
Hanseatic is the clear favourite in Blue Diamond Stakes betting at Ladbrokes.com.au for last year’s winning trainer / jockey combination of Anthony Freedman and Luke Currie.
The undefeated son of Street Boss took his record up to three-from-three a fortnight back when completing the Blue Diamond Preview – Prelude double.
Sepoy (2010) was the last colt to take out the hattrick and the money is on Hanseatic to repeat the feat a decade on despite a less than ideal barrier draw.
In the past 15 years just one Blue Diamond Stakes winner has come from barriers 1 – 3 with Miracles Of Life (1 of 14 in 2013).
Barrier five has produced three Blue Diamond Stakes winners in the past 11 years and four in the past 20 making it the most successful in recent times.
Lyre (2019) jumped from gate five last year and this year it is Lindsay Park’s $17 outsider Personal drawn in five.
The last time back-to-back Blue Diamond Stakes winners jumped from the same barrier was in 2008-07 with Reaan and Sleek Chassis both saluting from gate nine.
Craig Williams rides Fastnet Rock filly Personal chasing his second win in four years after that aboard Catchy (2017), while co-trainer David Hayes is after his record seventh Blue Diamond Stakes winner (since 1983).
Personal won second-up at Flemington on January 18 in easier company, but this looks a tough ask on the weekend against a field of better credentialed and proven rivals.
The David & Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig operation have a total of three Blue Diamond chances on Saturday with Personal joined by stablemates Riverina Storm ($41) and Aryaaf ($26) drawn gates six and eight respectively.
In the past 10 years two other barriers have each produced two Blue Diamond Stakes winners 11 and 15.
Rathlin ($15) and triple-figure roughie Fayerra ($101) will be looking to become the third Blue Diamond Stakes winner in the past 11 years from their gates drawn barriers 11 and 14.
The Team Snowden-trained second favourite Rulership is looking to turn the tables on Hanseatic after a lead-up second in the Prelude and drew well midfield in barrier seven, which last produced a winner in 2012 with Samaready.
The BD Fillies Prelude winner Letzbeglam chases the double achieved in recent years by the likes of Lyre (2019), Catchy (2017) and Earthquake (2014) from barrier three where she will be working to stay out of trouble.
The Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained Magic Millions 2YO Classic winning filly Away Game is drawn gate 10 with Bel Esprit (2002) the only Blue Diamond winner in 20 years to jump from the barrier.
Her well-backed stablemate Muntaseera is looking to go one better than her lead-up second in the Prelude behind Letzbeglam and starts from 13 where no Blue Diamond winner in the past two decades has jumped from.
